It’s in the decor rules set by the developers who want to keep everything uniform like paint colours, two choices for crépi, fence panels only to be rigid metal same colour everywhere but fill-ins allowed. Every house has fibre optique so no need for dishes which are ugly. It actually makes the whole place look very smart and clean and there is a central green space with a fountain and a play area fenced to keep dogs out. We have composting bins everywhere along with communal bins for the HLM flats and glass banks. The local Mairie keeps all the grass, verges, flood basins and other green areas neat and tidy and the roads are swept by the little machine every couple of weeks.
As someone who owns a regency townhouse in Brighton complete with a list of rules that ran to no less than 8 double sides of A4, you couldn’t pay me all the money in the world to buy another house where someone else tells me what I can and cant do with my own property, within the obvious parameters. Having to have a fifteen minute discussion with someone about the shade of purple I wanted to paint the kitchen and pitch it like I was on Dragons Den was quite something, and thats ignoring the fact that the council decides the one shade of beige you’re allowed to paint the outside, where you have to buy it from, and how often you have to paint it. It was my dream house which is why I kept it when I came here (my sister and fam live in it now), but yeah… never again. At least you don’t have the added delight of bungaroosh in your newly built place, it was a joy putting a picture on the wall and not knowing if you were going to kit a massive rock, a load of building rubble, or take the entire wall down with one tap…!
It’s only the outside here, you can do what you want with gardens and interiors as long as trees do not interfere with the neighbours. Lots of folks have those lovely forged metal decorations of palm trees or the sun attached to the façades. I expect by now and a few years down the line, there will be no problem with changing colours of fencing etc. I do have to say though, its nice everyone has the same finish in colour of doors and windows, no snobbishness there plus everywhere has increased in value too.

Oh the joys of working in Brighton! I was carrying out a kitchen refit and the lime had completely eaten away the pattress box for the cooker elctrics, destroyed a gas pipe someone also burried in the wall.

Having said that - there is one scenario where a VPN might add some security which is public wifi, especially in smaller venues. Not that anyone could snoop your actual https traffic, but it is more likely someone could match traffic to an individual user and that brings the potential that knowing which sites were visited could be useful. And a VPN will hide that. So the tablet now has Wireguard set up.
I’ll need to have a look at that as it seems to support IPv6 directly, whereas OpenVPN needs a reachable IPv4 address to connect.
Unfortunately my OpenVPN server in the UK now sits behind CGNAT

I’ve been unceremoniously dumped, er sold, by TalkTalk to an outfit I’d never heard of caller “Rise Fibre”. Not clear at the moment if this is good, bad or the same. Rise do use CGNAT but apparently you can have a fixed IPv4 if willing to part with an extra fiver a month. TalkTalk offer a public IPv4 but it is dynamic, not fixed (that said the last time it changed was January). TalkTalk are on the verge of bankruptcy though so getting away from them might not be a bad idea.
My “main” ISP remains Andrews and Arnold - I get 30 IPv4 addresses and a /48 IPv6 network (not even I can think of a way to use all 1208925819614629174706176 IP addresses that gives me). I went with their L2TP offering (which I think is unique) when they wanted me to move off copper as it was cheaper to access their network via TalkTalk.
Vodafone, it was my parents’ now my sister’s.
They were on Virgin before but they’re really quite spendy so she changed it, unfortunately without talking to me first.

Voda are cheap but as well as the CGNAT they like long contracts so I’m guessing that you can’t even go to another ISP - mind you I am now slightly regretting agreeing to two years with TalkTalk, can’t move until Nov '27.
You can but it usually costs, some companies offer to help, or did, with early contract ending costs.
The way I understood it was that usually you still have to pay the get out fee, but they give you a credit to match. So you are still out of pocket short term.
I think if you can say the signal’s not working you could get out
OK. So then, what do us satellite tv watchers in France need to do to be able to continue watching UK television for free ?

I just moved, and I’m going to put up another dish because they are cheap as chips (many are free) and I already have everything else I need.
I could buy a Freely- Manhattan Aero- but I suspect that if I wait many other solutions will come to market. This sort of thing is likely the long term solution, but there should be some competitors when demand supports them.
I also don’t particularly like the idea of having to pay for a VPN, and moreover I’m worried about how broadcasters like to hunt for 'illegal; users and shut them down. So I will happily chug along with old technology for as long as it lasts.
The other option is using a Firestick, which carries the same risk and seems to require a lot of time to stay ahead of the VPN shutdowns.

Most likely but it really depends on how urgent the need to leave is, A friend got out of his as they sighted breech of contract over the speed and number of users causing throttling. He is an IT professional and was promised a very good service which they failed to provide.
Me too, especially as I find around 80% of what’s on telly abysmal to say the least, especially at weekends. I can’t even watch YT now since the trouble with it began and French tv on Fransat allows me to see the lists but not the programmes. I must get onto them today about that.
Last night I watched in pure ranting anger the dangerous clowns in high performance police cars chasing a robber through a built up area at 100 mph risking life and limb to all who live there. Not to save life in emergency but to crash into a stolen car, what is the bloody point of these boy racers?

Yes, if you can argue that he service you are getting is not as advertised that is one “get out of jail free” card if you can play it successfully.
Or if Rise significantly alter the terms in my case. Not sure that routable but dynamic IP switching to CGNAT counts but would probably try arguning the case.
Well, he should have been able to tell the difference between “cheap and best effort” from “expensive with some sort of SLA” then.
I see that the Manhattan Aero comes with an inbuilt VPN that requires an annual subscription after the first 12 months. Do you happen to know how much that costs ?
