Site un-responsive at times?

Not sure how much can be done - I don’t have the access (nor TBH the time).

There was a huge spike in traffic in Sept which looks to be ongoing

It’s all anonymous users.

@cat could put in a support call and see if Communiteq/Discourse Hosting can suggest anything (that isn’t just “buy more capacity”), or restrict access to users who are not logged in to, say, just General Discussion or try to figure out from the logs if the site is being scraped by bots but I suspect that she has quite a bit on her plate as well as SF.

Personally I’d go for the “restrict access” option and see if that works.

On the photographic site I help moderate we had problems last year with typically 2000+ bots as guests. We made some changes, restricting access to guests so they could view limited areas of the site (it’s not a flat structure like SF) . Changes were also made, possibly reducing the frequency of calls that could be submitted for content, that seemed to solve the problem. This year we’re seeing typically 5000+ bots normally and peaking over 10,000 at times. The site gets a little laggy sometimes but hasn’t been knocked off the net like SF has a few times.

Just to add, we’re typically seeing 100 times as many bots active on the site as logged in users these days.

FWIW it may be coincidence, but when that Russian data center was hit, for a couple of days SF seemed better.

Hi all,

We are still working on this.
Could you please let me know when (time / date) it is slow to load and whether you are on a mobile / tablet / pc etc and even specific posts.

The more info the better - thank you!

Xx

FWIW after writing the above comment 6 days ago things seem to have been much better.

Much better for me too, no problem loading and switching to a new post, at the moment. Thanks Cat

Still having problems. It is intermittent. Will definitely be keeping an eye out so you can get more info. I always use a PC, and Firefox. Keep up the good work @cat :pink_heart:

I had a few 502’s for a short while after midnight (Chrome Android mobile not wifi) a couple of nights ago. I don’t think it’s your site I think the platform hosting it is running out of key resource so your site is not being ‘served’.

Whether it’s number of nodes available to connect to, or some sort of buffering or buffer size problem (eg because resources now taken up by AI trawlers or hacking attempts) that is what it feels like. The platform. either isn’t providing enough of a particular resource or they are providing enough still, but the resource is now being gobbled up somewhere else so your site is no longer getting it.

I used to be a computer performance specialist but unlike most, usually I would go by feel if there was a problem then look for evidence to test the theory. So this is just what it “feels” like is not working in the way the site reacts.

Having said what I did, it was a bit laggy just moments ago: 19:19 UK time, browser Brave on Android.

I wonder if this is the knock-on effect of an upgrade? Until a few weeks ago there was a very useful drop-down option that sorted out read from unread. You could click on unread and they all became read. That option vanished a few weeks ago, and whether coincidentally or not, the painfully-slow-to-load problem started - for me. Several times a day I have to re-load posts as they never launch, or only after what seems a ridiculously long time. Today that happened on two or three occasions, spread throughout the day. I only ever access via a newish android phone.
