Grit blast, as I say. Nothing on the surface of those ‘bricks’ will resist a going-over with grit. I used to have Blaster Master take years of rust off iron keels on boats. Come out all shiny and new. And I’d slip in my rusty mild steel frying pans - a 10 sec blast, turned out like mirrors!
