With DRLs and/or the Auto headlight setting, our lights are already on.
I’m not keen on the auto setting, because on the last two cars that had it, it seems to panic and engage double speed when it’s no more than spitting.

I rarely drive after dusk and had forgotten that my old Renault Clio 3’s headlights switch on automatically after dusk. Don’t know if they switch on automatically when it’s raining. Probably not.
If you need the wipers going to see where you’re going, you need to slow down.
When it’s raining hard, I switch my wipers to max speed, and I slow down. Always have, always will….
If visibility disappears, I’d stop with all lights flashing, but haven’t yet faced such an experience.
I got pretty close one morning coming from Le Havre towards Caen - visibility down to about 25m at one point, if that!
A few times I’ve found the ACC can see further than I’ve been able to when its been really murky, especially on the A84.
There’s also the reduction in speed limits when there are roadworks… a favourite on British motorways as well.

Have had had it happen in Jo’burg (alt. c.1750m) and the Free State with massive hailstones the size of marbles hitting the car. one has to stop instantly otherwise it’s a total respray, or worse.
I knew what to do because previously my secretary in her two week old Toyota Camry had carried on driving in a hail storm on the high veldt - respray over body filler!
