I was really enjoying this thread about Starlink residential and understanding it’s workings. We still have no fibre, although Orange say it’s getting closer to us. I think Starlink could be a viable option. However the talk has moved onto people’s views of Musk or cars!!!
I don’t care, I would just like to know about the the Starlink offer.
As I said the problem with trying to take an ethical stance when dealing with companies is that you find most are not ethical. Musk is a particularly egregious example and, importantly it is all about him personally. As you said - it is a personal choice and, generally, I prefer not to engage with his companies.
But, I have to grudgingly admit that Starlink might be the only rational choice in some circumstances. In which case forfeiting internet because you don’t like Musk could be considered a bit silly.
It’s an online discussion, of course people are allowed to chip in whether they have useful info or not. Some people just drop by for the conversation.
This seems a common trait on this forum that a thread quickly diverges away from the original question into a lot of personal opinions that have no relevance to the original discussion. It’s a shame.
As a former Roadster owner you could not pay me to have another Tesla, in fact they ended up paying me so much compensation for the torture of owning one they virtually did pay me to have it, and that’s without even considering the connection to Musk, that’s just due to the horrific build quality and even more horrific customer service. It’s good to know both have improved seemingly though, but I am absolutely “fool me once…” when it comes to that man and his businesses.
It’s more akin here to a discussion in the pub than a board meeting with a rigid agenda and, often, the divergence is more interesting than the initial point.
I have also ordered a basic Starlink package for my wife’s house in brexshitland. Discussing it with her buddies the other night at dinner, the concensus was that Starlink answers to no one and it is simply Elon adding on a tenner for himself simply because he dislikes the UK and all in it..
I think if one can do this without question or accountability must put one high up in the power league.
We may have to give serious thought to going down the Starlink route. We’ve been promised fibre for the last 3 years and still no show despite the cabinet being no more than 500m away. It’s supposed to arrive before the end of this year, so will delay the decision for now.
I have not read the small print, but it seems that you can cancel when you want and billing ceases when they receive the kit back. No questions asked….
Maybe, if this true, just do it and cancel when you get the fibre
Orange was telling me fibre wasn’t possible for months after watching their contractors roll out poles and then fibre past my house.
Then a couple of young chaps from Bouygues stopped by asking if I was interested in fibre and I almost ripper their arms off.
Fibre provides 30x the DL speed of my old WIMAX connection for the same monthly fee and porting the Orange landline over to a Bouygues VoIP connection saves me €25 a month as an added Brucie Bonus.
I’m in the UK and both Open Reach and Fibrus are supposed to be in a ‘race’ to deliver, but getting any information, let alone sense out of them is impossible.
4G, we dream of 4G, but it’s not here either, there’s only about 25 properties that are in a total black spot for services.
We do have electricity, so I suppose we should be grateful!
