Same here, but not the garden stuff - that’s all fuel driven. Could do with something quieter to strim close to the house.
Can’t really justify (or afford) going to 40v
I almost wish that I had bought the bigger version (Makita DUR365UZ) as you did.
I believe that Makita sell nylon and metal cutting blades for your model which makes it a bit more versatile.
Having said that the Makita DUX60Z is even more versatile as it has a split shaft with a range of attachments.
Peter,
I usually use the strimmer just for the grass edges, around trees and the odd spots of bramble etc.
However earlier this year I left our first cut so late that I had no option other than to use a strimmer on it first.
I reckon very very roughly that I cut around 200-300 square metres in 30-40 minutes.
Oh, you poor thing.
It’s fine, Dorothea.
I’m a changed man.
I’m so calm these days, my nearest & dearest have almost buried me twice.
Sorry, no sympathy at all! Strimmers are messy, noisy, leave bits of plastic all over the place, need petrol and oil and replacement line and need maintenance. A mad invention.
Get a scythe. Almost silent, as fast or faster than a strimmer, easy to cut round trees etc without damage, and the only maintenance is sharpening it, which is a skill to be learned, but isn’t that hard. You can cut a lawn with it or a meadow, and if a meadow, it leaves the cut grass in nice lines that are easy to collect.
Thanks for the support everyone, I am pleased to say that I completed all our strimming and helped the neighbours strim the verges around the impasse as well, which is a bonus.
20 years in agriculture and horticulture and I have never met a reliable strimmer.
When I was a young forestry, countryside and gamekeeping student we were taught the old fashioned version, scything, as I think I discussed with someone on here, but in the current circumstances, that is not an option. I am so happy that with my new prescriptions I have some of my old energy and strength and the garden is looking really good!
A common problem for strimmers is that the fuel filter goes “hard”, and so will not deliver fuel. Replacements, from China, are cheap, but, of course, take 3 weeks to arrive!
The filter is okay, the pipe won’t stay in place.
Hi
Just to get my 2d in. My dealer in England delivers long lectures about the quality of unleaded fuel, particularly from supermarkets. Apparently it goes “off” after a couple of weeks and blocks the carburetor. He put me on to using a synthetic premix which stores really well both in the can and the machine. (Don’t forget to shake the can before refueling to mix the oil and fuel.) Touch wood, I’ve had far fewer strimmer and chainsaw issues since I started using it. But it’s not cheap- about 25€ for 5l. I have a neighbour who keeps a goat to eat his brambles…
