Don’t foret folks that most supermarkets here are franchised so the Gérants have the say in what goes on and what they sell beyond the standard range of the company’s goods, hence local producers getting in on the act. My local one sells a range of ice cream made up inthe mountains but its a bit expensive for my purse and yoghurts but it seems very popular as they are always re-stocking the fridge.
Our Super U loyalty card pays for the Christmas shop. €97 on it this year!
Used to be so many cents went on the Loyalty Card for each euro spent… way back when… now many shops only add cents for certain things etc… but it can mount up and be useful at festive times.
I’m with you regarding Grand Frais, although I would normally refer to it as a large grocery store, along with it’s smaller brother, Provenç’Halles, due to the lack of non food items. I bought fresh galangal there this very morning, along with Thaï chives and baby bok choy.
Many, many years ago, I worked for a company as a powder tanker driver and their big contract was out of Rugby Cement at err Rugby. It was a 24 hour operation so I did days and another driver did nights. Either someone was sent in a car bringing him each evening and which took me back home, or we got a lift from normal day drivers. But as our wagon never went near the yard we filled up each night at a local BP station. It wasn’t long before we decided that we’d better collect what we had earned and the cab was chock bang full of cartons of wine glasses. ![]()
How is it redeemed, by any goods from any Super U, that Super U, selected goods from either or cash in hand?
I always refuse to get involved with such things to the extent now that the local staff never ask anymore in order to avoid the hard stare. ![]()
But I do demand both receipts though so I can keep a proper accounting back at home.
When I go through the Till I tell them I want to use “whatever” is on my Loyalty Card… and that amount is deducted from the cost of that day’s shopping. Some shops one enters a “code” but at Intermarche I simply sign the Till bit which they keep.
Different shops have different routines of proving you are a bona fide shopper and entitled to xyz euros off the cost of the shopping.
So you can redeem cash, but just from that one store, or any others in the chain then? And only against other goods bought, not cash in hand?
I’m sure someone has pointed out the downside of this, perhaps it allows them to keep tabs on you, but on the other hand they do that anyway if you always pay by card.
must confess, no idea…
Apart from Perigueux (Leclerc) once a month, I shop locally
When you come to pay you are given the option to deduct what’s on the card from your current bill. Certainly with Leclerc you can use it and add to it in any store. If you want to redeem the money when in another Leclerc store you have to enter your pin.
But you can come away with folding money, maybe to spend at a different place altogether then?
you don’t get cash in itself … the sum on the Loyalty Card is deducted from the cost of your shopping and you then hand over your own cash/creditcard/cheque/whatever to pay the outstanding cost of your shopping…
you do NOT get cash…
No. At least not with Leclerc. You can only use the money on the card to reduce the price on your bill.
I have seen some Tills where there is (or was) a Cash Back option, where you paid for your shopping xyzEuro with your Bank/Credit Card and asked for a sum 20/30 euros as Cash Back… ie Cash in your Hand… for which you paid with your CCard/BankCard
Very useful. Couple of the small shops in our local villages have that facility - very helpful for someone who doesn’t want to go into town.
I always thought that cash back was a way of getting cash without having to go to a hole in the wall, not a deduction on further purchases. I think I’ll continue to give it a miss then.
It is.
As I’ve explained above… Cash Back is when you pay over and above the cost of your shopping and the shop gives you the extra sum you’ve paid… as Cash in Hand (Cash Back)
It saves going to a Hole in the Wall…
But can you do that if you make no further purchase, or even if you don’t have a store card?
Yes, you do it at the time you are about to pay for your shopping (ask if the Cashier will “do Cash Back”) and if the answer is Yes, you say how much you want…
Think of the Cashier as being a Human Hole in the Wall ![]()
Well he/she is not is he/she, you don’t have to buy apples from a hole in the wall before it will give you any money, but this one will only give you money if you buy something first.
I’m not being picky, just trying to get the full picture. ![]()
