I don,t think we have enough information about the vehicle,is it FR reg or still UK reg?The fact that it was brought over to France before Brexit makes no difference,it should still have been re-registered,what process was easy? What paperwork did your partner do?If it is still UK registered, then no paperwork has been done.As i said in my previous post,if it is FR reg, sell here in France, not a problem.
I was asking because if you had not actually informed DVLA of the export then in theory you would be able to take the car back, put the old registration plates on and get it down to an MOT station.
You could check the status of the registration plate here to see >>
If the case is that it was ‘exported’ and DVLA were informed then you need to read and follow this process >>
When sending docs to HMRC, I had to send scans of the V5, original purchase invoice and French registration document.
That depends. ANTS will inform DVLA of the export when the French registration is complete though, if it’s pre-Brexit, then it might have been through a préfecture which may have been less diligent.
Thanks for your reply. The vehicle is French reg since 2011. and is absolutely legal here, no problem . I’ve no idea what paperwork my partner did at the time. The UK docs I have are : last UK Tax disc, + plus a copy of original reg in UK , nothing UK in my or parners name, I can’t even find the invoice from when we bought it, although I do know which Merc garage… I think I am probably going to have to sell it here!
Thanks for the info - it is RHD so may be a bit limiting !
Put it up for sale on here, you never know .
I LOVE RHD. And still miss our old merc (RHD) that we brought with us from the UK.
Ideal for driving in Lot et Garonne countryside along lanes where oncoming traffic believes it can sit on the crown of the road. I can tell exactly how close to the keb/ditch I can get in a RHD car - no idea in LHD.
There is at least one Facebook group dedicated to the sale of RHD cars in Europe. Might be worth a try.
In 2022 I considered returning a car to uk we bought over in 2019, but was told by HMRC in an email that once it had been out of the UK for three years i would have to pay import duty and DVLA would only issue a reg’ number once they had received import documentation…in the event i was fortunate to find a guy here who was desperate to buy a five year old rhd car and got for a fair price. …they are about, just need to find such a Brit!
Hi Jan4,i think you can sell it here in France,no problem, for example,i am looking for a RHD car at the moment, have you got more details about the car and where you are located please, thanks.
Thank-you, everyone for participating and helping me with all your knowledge. I am still undecided what I will do, depends on logistics and travel costs versus eventual sale price. If I do decide to sell I will definitely put an ad in Survive France (if they do that) so watch this space - Dark Red, AMG Merc C class. A bientot Jan4
