Tattooing - love it or hate it - and Thoughts about a Blog

A great pencil technique not often seen these is Sanguine and White pencil highlights on a coloured stock. Particularly good for clothing and nudes, where the White pencil does the ‘shadows’ - reversing the usual black or dark tones. For those into difference I would repeat the use of colored stock (paper or card).
I often use white gouache as a highlighter on watercolors as well.

Have you tried it Norman?

Thank you, much appreciated! I might at a later date show some of my own favorites of my own work, but I think I have encroached on this topic and will get my knuckles rapped!

Yes, I have, but although good as I describe, it doesn’t suit my 'heavier subjects as well. Although gouache does work on my military stuff very well. The key is choosing the right mid-tone card - buff, or grey are notably good for anatomical works. Maybe we should open up a different discussion on these things? I would be very happy to put in my ten-penn’orth worth.

Norman - why don’t you start a new Thread yourself.

Personally, I think that would be of great interest to all arty folk :hugs: and that includes those who “can” and those who “admire”. :upside_down_face::wink:

What is ART? - any Artists out there?

Culture Art & Design

Jan 18 - …of us are more talented than others… so I thought a general chat, going hither and thither… might be interesting and fun… What is your idea of ART ?? Do you create ART ?? Is ART important to you ?? How to Buy and how to Market ART ?? Feel free to share ideas and info… and some examples of ART…

@Dan_Wood and @Norman_Clark

Dan, the Thread you have linked to - ran its course and finished in March.

It would be great to have a New Thread with some new ideas and new Talent - like Norman, explaining what he does …

It is a thread about art and artists - Norman has been dipping in and out of older threads for a few months now - that’s why l annointed him ‘timewalker’ - art doesn’t, in my opinion, get stale and l thought that he might like to give it a look and perhaps carry it on rather than have to start his very own thread on the same subject.

As an aside l personally think that looking at, talking about and creating Art can never “run it’s course”. It is worthy of constant and wondrous bewilderment. Of coursr l could be wrong, l often am😊

I think perhaps a “Norman Blog” - where he explains what he likes doing with his Art skills, interspersed with examples of his work. Norman is obviously talented and, I think, worthy of his own space on the forum. I would love to follow his story. :hugs:

Dan, when folk stop posting on a Thread, it is surely fair to say it has run its course. Norman’s Art/skill is worth more than a post on an old Thread.

We must bring him to the World !! He deserves his own space !!! :hugs:

Give! him! space!

Jeanette is an incredible artist of international renown and ‘obviously’ talented - so perhaps she and Norman are worthy of their own Spaces - We need to be even handed in our approach - Perhaps there are others who might also qualify for their ‘Own Space’ too. But then again isn’t the forum for all members, perhaps we should all have our own space, Artists, Writers, Photographers, Political chroniquers, Gite Owners etc. - all of us.

The idea has merits, but (I am genuinely sorry to say ‘but’) I think we might have to guard against subtle barriers being raised to maintain a level of ‘competence’ or ‘experience’ or ‘readiness to engage at an appropriate level’ with those who ‘gate-keep’ the precious prize of specialism.

I can’t see Jeanette or Norman doing that, but it is often inherent in special groups to erect barriers to group access. At present, no hint of that here on SF.

Acknowledged absolutely that Dan anticipated this concern by mentioning the need for even-handedness. I am just endorsing his caution.

Everyone is entitled to do their own thing. We can all do our own Blog if we choose.

From what I have seen here and elsewhere - Blogs are a great idea for someone who wants to tell us about “whatever”. It’s a bit like a Personal Diary.

A Blogger puts in updates according to how life is going on… I could liken it to “Letter From America - Alistair Cooke”

We already have one or two Bloggers on SF with updates monthly or whenever suits them. :hugs: As I have said - anyone can do it. There are no barriers or lack of even handedness that I have noticed on this Forum.

A Thread is a discussion around the Dinner Table… and can cover a multitude of subjects -fine, as long as no-one spills the gravy. This Thread is about Tattooing - and now we are discussing Norman, Blogs and heaven knows what else… it’s all in the game… :joy:

I try to give Norman a little good-natured encouragement and it seems to have been completely misunderstood - pass the port someone, please. :upside_down_face::wink::laughing:

PS: In the Blog Category there are 2823 Blogs, so it can’t be rocket science.

You see!

@Stella “as long as no-one spills the gravy…”

Already there is a sign of spawning antipathy to gravy-spillers!

If I invited guests to a dinner party and quelqu’un eût renversé la sauce (trust that’s approximately right)± that should signal total licence to guests to throw cheese, juggle pieces of bread, pour wine over other guests, and engage in an orgy of no-holds-barred bacchanalia to strangle any infant disapproval before it took breath.

That is surely written into the rules of any truly civilised dinner party?

New to me, I’ve seen “sleeve tattoos” on arms but not on legs.

Even I must admit that illustrated legs like that make ordinary legs look err… just extremely ordinary, and a bit cheap.

Those illustrations take tattooing to new heights of artistic and technical accomplishment IMO, especially as they are living go-anywhere-and- everywhere works of art.

Other tattoos look drab by comparison, but that’s just my drab outlook showing, :slightly_frowning_face:, and I’m contradicting my own stance on competition for status in art, aren’t I?

Oh well! :thinking::cold_sweat::face_with_hand_over_mouth::zipper_mouth_face:

Hi Stella, I have replied a little earlier that I would be happy to do this, but I have to say that in a very short space of time I see hassles appearing before the idea is even born.
I didn’t know Jeannette was an ‘artist of international repute’ - which I most certainly am not, and as I noted to you, and now generally I have been a ‘Champion’ of Commercial Art for over 50 years now - hence my library of published books on this being applied to Market and Lifestyle sectors NOTE; NOT my works, but a celebration of the works of hundreds of others. I do comment on the presumed effectiveness of them, but only wearing my Marketing Professorial hat.
On that basis and as suggested by Dan, and as Jeannette is a prolific poster on SF, she might and probably would be a better choice of candidate for the idea than me.
However, thanks for the thought, I appreciate it.
