I think it goes well beyond houses.
It doesnât Chris, a net wealth of just ÂŁ1.2 million gets you into the top 10% in the UK, houses in my road are worth ÂŁ800K+ so add in savings and a decent pension pot and youâre there.
Its human nature for people to want what they cannot have, or criticise what others have got, whether or not one miight feel they want it.
My observation was mearly the futility of argument on the subject.
Ad hominem, really?
Iâm not sure how else one can describe criticism of the arguer rather than the argument, it wasnât meant as pejorative.
Sorry, itâs not about jealousy. Over my lifetime so far I have met a number of very wealthy people and it seems that the more a person has, the more they want to keep it - they are not happy with parting with any of their wealth. Some become quite paranoid about people with less assets and believe that everyone is trying to steal their wealth. Many of them do not enjoy being wealthy and say it is hard work to hang on to their assets instead of relaxing and enjoying what they have Equally, I have known a number of fiscally poor people who have fantastic lives because they donât have the worry of protecting their wealth from all the people they think are trying to steal it. As a child I grew up in a poor working class family, meaning my parents were not affluent but we were always fed and had a roof over our heads. When I got older I had a very good well paying job so I could buy a lot more of the things my parents could never afford. However, I have never chased higher and higher levels of wealth as I want to enjoy my life - and chasing the highest bank balance possible will not make me happy.
Wow! @Stainless So many sweeping comments in that post I think you might need a new brush. ![]()

I get your point and would agree some are jealous although not all. Likewise there are the wealthy who simply want to keep on collecting more despite have plenty x2 for what they could possibly want or need.
Sorry you feel that way - life is too short so letâs just enjoy what we have while we have it.
Not sure why you want to feel sorry for me, you seem to be concerned about people with wealth trying to protect their liquid assets, according to you they are unhappy and paranoid, worrying about people trying to steal their assets. Iâve never read so much bollocks. Itâs certainly not hard work to keep hold of your money but I love spending it, the pleasure, as an aesthetic hedonist is uncontrollable.
You say life is too short yet you feel the need to comment on others and how they live their life.
My wife and I are currently eating some bbq ribs I prepared a couple of days ago along with coleslaw I made during the week. We are supping Chateau Margaux 1982, my favourite along with Chateau Palmer. Itâs not a classic pairing but when you are minted who gives a fuck.
Not sure Iâll want to chase the highest bank balance but ÂŁ330 per day after tax on the interest of my capital is sufficient.
Did you say Margaux 1982? I had some of that. And some Palmer before it got really expensive.
But with barbecue ribs? Novel combination.
Most people on SF manage with much less than, what? - about ÂŁ170k gross p.a. Your post seems a little insensitive to that, to say the least.
How much does it cost? ![]()
Well, I am very happy for you and I hope you have a long and pleasant life. none of my comments were directed at you personally so please donât take them that way.
Billy, I simply resent the comments that people with wealth are âparanoidâ and â do not enjoy being wealthyâ all they want to do is cling on to their money. Itâs simply not true in my experience. According to @Stainless people with wealth worry about others trying to steal their assets, absolute chip on the shoulder drivel.
SOME people - not ALL
@Stainless just seen your last post, no problem. ![]()

IME some people with wealth barely mention it and often use their financial security to support charities and are usually nice people.
Some are, frankly, insufferable and never let you forget how loaded they are.
Some, and Iâll certainly include Mr Musk in this category, want more no matter how much they have. I mean, seriously, how does having (on paper) a trillion differ from 10 or 20 billion - surely he must have bought as many politicians as he can make use of by now.
The vast majority absolutely do in my experience. Perhaps with good reason, perhaps not. I once witnessed a screaming match between a legendary musician and his wife because she didnât get a receipt for a taxi fare. She didnât get the receipt because someone else paid for it, but so certain was he that everyone was trying to cheat him at every turn that he had to have that receipt. I reminded her of the receipt incident the day she received her divorce settlement and had to tie her hands behind her back so she didnât send him a text asking whether he needed a receipt for 25 million poundsâŚ
