For me it’s over 300/year so well worth 22 days of a bit of planning!
Now, the difficult thing is to decide what to spend that on ![]()
![]()
No not hard, down to part time this year so bills and food ![]()
I did think about moving over, but with my FIL having dementia I would have to follow him around all day turning things off all the time ![]()
Please check for yourself, but did you know that with the exception of the 22 x 16 hour red periods in the year that all the other Tempo kWh rates are less than standard Heures Creuses?
Also, Tempo standing charges are slightly less than HP/HC.
I’m baffled as to why anyone living full time here would still use normal HP/HC, & I suspect that the recent improvement in the advantages of Tempo are a precursor to HP/HC being done away with.
As other have already said, it’s really not hard to leave certain things until the rate is cheaper.
In the future, as more & more grid power will come from sustainable but potentially intermittent sources, we will all have to manage our peaks of consumption. However, the technology already exists for your home & it’s appliances to automatically make use of power when it’s cheaper, so it will not be difficult.
There are already suppliers in the UK that have “agile tarifs” that on occasions of excessive wind &/or solar production have been known to pay consumers to use power.
Surely you’d do that anyway? …but 3 times the cost per unit on red days does focus the mind a bit.
The reality is the savings don’t mean that many changes. Your already using off peak power so a lot of your routines won’t change.
For us - we now have off peak tariffs we didn’t have before. So we made changes like washing machine dishwasher etc after 10pm as a norm. Red days we avoid the oven and minimise the hob… That’s it. Everyone’s budget is different but you only need to make small changes to get the best out of it.
I know there’s some OTT behaviours being boasted about on Facebook but that’s not mandatory
We have well pumps that run 24/7 at the moment due to problems with the river flow they have been trying to sort out for the last 3 month’s if we don’t run them we would loose the fish ponds, cameras on 24/7 , the electric fan that drives the hot air system and with all due respect you don’t know what it is like looking after my FIL, it is not simple with someone with severe dementia as due to the likes of incontinence, food spillage, showers are frequent as is washing m/c, tumble dryer usage and need for hot water is not something we can plan for, because of this we can’t really do red days, in the future yes, just now it’s not really viable.
It is probably easy for most folks, but not everyone is as fortunate as that.
I have a record of my electricity consumption for the last 4 years for every 15 minute segment. I used this data for 2022 to figure out, given the years red/white/blue days, how much I would have saved. It was quite easy to do on a spreadsheet. This is really the equivalent of doing nothing about red days and the saving over a year was about €90. I still haven’t switched to Tempo but intend to after this winter. I’m also going to experiment over the winter with what I can do to save electricity on red days to see what is possible.
In the first 12 months of being on Tempo, we (coincidentally) used 35% more electricity than the previous 12 months (mainly due to buying an EV, and my wife now baking bread* every other day).
Yet our annual electricity bill only increased by 30€, thanks I) to the remarkable value of non red day rates via Tempo, and 2) doing exactly what several others have commented on, ie not using energy intensive items on red days. It has required only modest behavioural changes…
*Absolutely no complaints from me!
@Griffin36 I’m so sorry to hear about your FIL & please accept my sympathies for the situation. My own Mother suffered from dementia & I know how difficult things can be.
Clearly your situation means that you can’t always pick & choose when run certain appliances, but…
…sounds like something that is going to go away in the long run, & may not be a heavy load anyway, although I can’t tell from here.
Equally, though…
…are not large loads so wouldn’t cause you much financial stress.
The point I’m trying to make is that you’re currently paying quite a lot more for your electricity during the 8408 hours per year that aren’t Tempo HP red, just to avoid those 352 hours of high cost.
EDF advised against moving over to tempo at this time on the phone so I went with their advice, though one benefit is at long last they look to be hopefully going to move their backsides and fit a linky at last.
Which, once in place, will make it very easy for you to change tarifs in whichever direction you wish.
I do realise that
and that’s why I have been trying to get one for more than two years and I haven’t actually got it yet ![]()
Just looked at my “Fil Actu” for yesterday, €11.21
. All down to unfortunate/unavoidable timings
Toaster is a thing to watch. Some are lowish voltage, but 2000W is not at all unusual.
It’s not on for very long though, unless you really like toast ![]()
Serial toast consumer, me.
Much more dangerous than kettle (another baddie, usually).
I should imagine making toast in a kettle would be quite dangerous ![]()

But safer than making tea in a toaster ![]()
