On a more practical level it should be easy to ban the abaya in art schools on Health & Safety grounds - using a welding torch or a lathe while dressed like that could easily have a very unfortunate outcome…
Personal behaviour when applied to clothing gives an indication of the belief of the wearer.
Look what happens when radical Islam takes hold, women not allowed to work, attend education etc. etc.
There is always a first step towards this state of affairs and banning the abaya in schools is exactly the right thing to do.

OH has sleeveless vests, bought in M&S around 1990’s and still going strong (OH and the vests 
)
thankfully, he’s kept any tendancy to wife-beating… well under wraps

Mind you the real meaning is little better, I have never heard of it before.
I remember them from Oz, never white, usually dark blue. 
Yet another garment I threw off forever the moment I left school, along with the strangler…errr, tie. 
Nah… string vests have never appealed…
I expect they are very warm, if worn beneath a shirt of course.

I never really got the idea of the string vest.
When I was a small boy we lived above a doctors surgery, my mother working as the receptionist. One of the doctors wore string vests all the time, clearly visible through his nylon shirts (this was the 1960s, after all) and it seemed such a strange thing.
In adult life I only ever wore a singlet for running.
Trapped air, warming. Which is why I never wear anything in bed, the space between me and the duvet is warmer.
However, nylon shirts can set you on fire. Too warming.
Used to conjure up images of fat men, with a ciggie hanging out of the corner of their mouths, egg and ketchup stains down the front and sitting reading the mail or sun. My OH could not stand vests since childhood apart from the hot sun athletic types for the summer in all colours.
