The football world cup

I thought you lived in or near Monbazillac. I was unaware of the renown of their football team!

I read in one of the papers yesterday that US hotel bookings are down compared with last year. They can’t work out if people are waiting for last minute bargains, or make that more realistic prices, or not going at all.

Fifa and Trump seem to have made it so complicated with matches all over the place that the expense may have put some fans off.

I was shopping in Wembley on that day!

Bookings were well down in Vegas when we were there last July, mind you it was over 45°C which might have put folks off but in general it was very quiet. Think folks are put off by the jet fuel problem if it gets worse too as its a long swim home

Think folks are put off by the hassle and rip-offs of the games in the US, as Canada and Mexico aren’t having the same probs.

I remember that day too! My dad and I were watching the match and we were due to pick up my mum from work but because of the extra time needing to be played, we decided to watch it and suffer her wrath!

Dear old mum didn’t like football and couldn’t understand why we were so elated. This meant her anger was somewhat diluted - thank goodness.

But my dad was never late picking her up again!

Apparently there’s a surplus of tickets now, but they’re still not cheap and international fans are still reticent.

Best ever World Cup TV ad ?

Nike’s 2002 Secret Tournament

Certainly the silliest, the most stars, the best ever referee and (pre-CGI) the most logistically insane.

I can’t find any enthusiasm for this football world cup I’m afraid. Maybe because of where it’s being held

Part of the problem is that FIFA themselves block booked large numbers of hotel rooms and then cancelled many of them a few weeks ago. The initial bookings and statements by FIFA about tickets sold caused confidence and huge investment by the hotels in anticipation of a booking bonanza. The subsequent cancellations by FIFA and a shortfall in expected bookings caused a big shortfall in occupancy for many hotels.

I’m struggling to remember a World Cup I’ve cared less about.

I asked my son in law what the feeling about it is where they live and folks he speaks to both at work and locally couldn’t really care less. Baseball,Rodeo and Speedway (cars) are more popular.

Several factors at play here, the local fans who go to the MLS games have been priced out, there won’t the usual massive influx of overseas fans, the WC is seen as connected to Trump and then you have the national apathy towards soccer.

Fuck FIFA…

0000’s of tickets are now available with many below face value, sold out my arse!

They should allow fans to bring in plastic bottles of water rather than queue for them at rip-off prices inside the stadia.

OTOH no metal water bottles!

@Gareth

OTOH at the moment there’s a fast, exciting and very skilful warm-up match taking place between France and Cote d’Ivoire. It’s live on TF1 and I’m posting during the half-time break.

what’s the score?
