After the war my mother stopped drinking water. Juice, tea & coffee during the day and gin and wine in the evening. Usually very modest amounts.
As she became more housebound the amounts crept up. We tried to encourage her to stick to a bottle of gin every two weeks, about 14 units a week. But at her age it seemed stupid. Why stress her for some hypothetical extra days of life?
I am now teetotal apart from the occasional digestif. Which my mother wouldn’t have understood at all.

Well, a hornet’s nest of opportunity here, I had no idea of the delights which await me, but maybe not, this bottle, which is now minus 2 generous drafts was the only one on offer at U. I think I will have to stock up on the variety next time I am in Nontron which, at 15 kms, is long distance for me now.
There is no danger of addiction, I stopped all alcohol imbibing dead, when my darling late wife Fran was diagnosed as an alcoholic, Apart from the hiatus when the crafty alco demons within her said ‘absoletely dear you can have a glass of red with our meals, don’t worry, I have seen the light’, Sadly, the only light was that reflected from her glass of red, so that was the end except when I was away from home and in a routier for the night.
Now Jules, the dog, does not reproach me but my intake is well within what an old chap can manage and, with all the falls and bumps I have these days, non of them are alcohol related.
Can it be true? Should I drink more in order to stay upright?

Of course. Doesn’t help having family in Tennessee either when visiting, always a visit to Lynchburg for some head spinning. I have actually found bottles here in LeClerc cheaper than in Kroger too even working out the exchange rate.
Well they say it does deaden the pain of falling over, usually you fall asleep first if you are lucky. Carry on in moderation, my old dad liked a tipple now and again and lived to ripe old age of almost 90 and mum 93 and both enjoyed it in moderation. Life is too short to worry, Putin might nuke us all tomorrow!

G&T is my summer favourite, too. To vary I have enjoyed Suze and tonic this year, made from gentiane root, a specialty from Auvergne (another good label of gentiane is Avèze).
If you enjoy a botanical lilt to your gin, I recommend trying Canada’s Ungava that has a hint of Labrador tea (a local leaf). @NotALot I’m a Fever Tree snob but will try your Intermarché recommendation, always on the lookout.
We finally got round to watching Oppenheimer (currently on ITV for free). I wish i had seen it in the cinema as the special effects didn’t suit our 32” TV, but found it well worth watching. If scary.
Did you consume much gin while watching?

What on earth have I neen missing all these years, nevertheless I did have another gin and T before bed which dragged on a bit because I got hooked once again on the reels which pop up from time to time and I am addicted to them.
Latest news is there has been a gin robbery, when I went to my bottle for an apero 10 minutes ago half the gin was gone !!!". I thought of ringing the gendarmes but, looking at the clock, realised that I wouldn’t get any sence out of them, apero hour.
I am consoling myself instead with the thought that | might have drunk it myself but, checking with a neighbour if there had been anyone hanging about I realise that I am not as thunk as some tinckle peep I am.

I have slightly similar issues with wine boxes. I know there are 4 x 75cl bottles in a 3l box but the boxes always go faster than 4 glass bottles do.
Maybe not thieves, but evaporation? Ah…stumbled on the truth, the hot weather!
But not in French units!
Suze is very popular back in Bretagne. I had a bottle for years for locals when they called, I couldn’t drink it, tasted like something you cleaned the car with. I still have a couple of Suze glasses which are made to tilt to one side

Fever Tree really is the bee’s knees of tonics.
If you have a Noz nearby, they occasionally have a slab or two in.

I can’t get over the price of Fever Tree in France. Bad enough in England, where luckily Aldi also sells it quite often.
Funnily enough I’ve found the individual small cans cheaper.
Thanks for the tip. Fever Tree is a permanent item at several local Carrefours (as well as Walker’s shortbread!).
