I wouldn’t trespass with it being an actual emergency situation like a fire or someone screaming fo4 help.

So do I, but they bi passed the meter and went away for the week. It emptied the chateaux d’eau. Now they can’t get to meter it’s buried in the road.

I wouldn’t. The laws of trespass etc. And in my case, a fear of dogs. Also, if you startled the horses etc.
I know I am probably being over cautious, I have been told more than once that I overthink things sometimes

I have done that several times, discovering it 24 hours later on at least one occasion. I think I have conquered it now by always leaving one of my Alpine sticks where I can see it from the kitchen veranda, if I don’t notice that I will certainly be alerted by the remaining stick where it lives in the rear veranda if it is sad and lonely, and single.
My memory is so bad that I have a piece of paper pinned in the kitchen where I write the location of anything that I have recently moved from its normal place.
Only works if I remember to write it down though, at the present time I am bereft of a useful pair of narrow nosed pliers which should be in the car door pocket. 
No I dont think you are being over cautious, they were exactly the things I was considering. They are home now and immediately turned off the tap, all good.

Nurturing neighbourliness is a good thing, in my experience.
In your shoes, I’d casually mention that I’d noticed the water was ON and that I’d wondered if it had been forgotten… but that I didn’t like to “trespass” and/or interfere… ??? but I’m very, very glad you weren’t away for days…

A short but puzzling addition to the above. It is fish market day and I was walking towards the immobile gates to take the Berlingo to collect our cod. I had left the gates switched with a key to manual until the technician arrives this afternoon. As I pushed the first gate open, the light began to flash and both gates started to move. I had to go back to the house to get the remote and then they couldn’t make their mind up whether to stay open or not. I managed to walk out and stopped for a while to make sure they shut and stayed shut. Bizarre behaviour. Even Jules who had agreed to wait on the terrasse came half way to them to see what was going on.
On my Kia that button can be ‘locked’ down by wedging it with a sliver of plastic. My Ceed ran with it permanently depressed that way for three years without problem. My new(er) Sportage has received the same treatment but it can display the number of stop/starts which remains at zero so far.
