Thermal camera

After a heavy hail attack, I had my roof scanned close up for cracked tiles and a quick thermal video of roof and chimney for 200€ - I doubt if any of your apps and second hand stuff would cut the mustard apart from which, how are you going to get close enough for a true reading…?

Yes, drones are great. I am slightly bemused by the idea of a “true reading”. There is a lot of informed and trained professional interpretation involved, but it’s just that… Interpretation. (I am both a professional and trained). With all the selfie sticks now one can get a reasonable stab at many otherwise difficult to access surfaces. Ps. As well as Delta T being critical, time of day and weather are also.

Questionable whether you need to? Heat will dissipate into a colder area so you would pick up a warmer than surrounding area. Thats how I have found leaks in underfloor heating or a tiled roof that is uninsulated underneath. With bulk insulation and a breathable undertile membrane not a lot of heat would leak so a std drone may look for broken tile but it would soon become apparent when half of it slips down the roof?

Drafts around doors, windows and electrical fittings are the bread and butter of the stop heat leaking issues

Lidl do a thermometer that works by pointing it to the surface whose temp. is required. Works brilliant. About €25. Usually Lidl (Parkside) items can be found online (eBay).

If you wish I will send you mine to try it out.

I hardly need a gizmo to tell me the situation here at The Plywood Shack. I learned the FR for this building - une passoire thermique - as it appeared in the latest on the grants for insulation improvements.

I see that une passoire serves for a sieve and a colendar - big holes, anyway.

Now thats worrying :face_with_hand_over_mouth: and I thought my UK house was the worst with its solid walls. Put up insulated plasterboard years ago, obviously worried about making the room a bit smaller, wish I had put up double the thickness. Your shack, has some insulation, Despite the holes?

When I mentioned on this forum the date my house was built [1958] when I bought it 4 years ago, some wag wrote "Ah! Shoddy French modern building! Where’s your sense of adventure, man?!"

And so it has proved. It didn’t occur to me that actual houses could be built as badly as this one. The moniker ‘The Plywood Shack’ is the reality.

I pin my hopes on this scheme. Le bon point de départ pour démarrer votre rénovation énergétique, c’est France Rénov’ !

A long discussion with EDF just now resulted in me being talked into believing that ‘Tempo’ was the best deal for me. That over a 12-month I would come out ahead .All the more reason for Plan A, the move south. Pau looks very meteoroligically enticing a.t.mo.

My ‘new’ Opel Vivaro is now this side of the Channel. Works will start to make it the bedroom on wheels I need for scoping points south.

Buying second hand and selling on is probably the cheapest way. I decided when looking at these something like the Flir One Pro - mentioned above appeared to have a good enough resolution and seen on EBay UK for around £200. Haven’t checked used prices in France. I’m waiting to see what house we buy before investing in one.

I have one of these:

It is very effective: I don’t think a non-professional needs a more expensive option. The only flaw I found is that the outline cross-referring to the non-infrared view is a bit out of alignment.

I also have the very cheap Lidl thermometer gun referred to above too and that is great for more detailed analysis.
