A year or so after my Borders farmer friend gave me a reject collie, he visited. He was stunned by the super-glossy coat of the dog.
“Pilchards, mate.”
And indeed it was the pilchard per night in her dinner that was responsible. She loved them.
In fact, she loved fish so much my neighbour told me that when the fish man in his van parked on her drive, which sloped up a bit, she would go across the road and lap the fishy water running out of the back of the van.
2 tbsp (14 g) sliced almonds. ( I don’t bother with these)
Salt and fresh ground pepper to taste.
Drain and rinse the chickpeas with cold water. Lay them out on a clean kitchen towel. Lay another clean kitchen towel on top and gently rub the chickpeas between the two towels. This will loosen the skins. Continue this process until most of the skins have been removed. The more you can remove the better, but you do not need to remove them all.
Using a potato masher, gently mash the chickpeas. Leave some larger pieces intact. Add the mayonnaise, pickles, brine, red onion and sliced almonds. Stir to combine.
Refrigerate the salad for about 1 hour, until chilled, then season with salt and pepper.
Enjoy
Now, it’s a weird phenomena, but cats won’t eat pork. Have you noticed you can’t buy pork cat food? Apparently, this is because pigs eat meat and cats, because they are clever, won’t eat animals that are meat eaters. We should perhaps have thought about this before turning cows into carnivores, which resulted in BSE. That your cat will munch chorizo may be because its heavily flavoured so perhaps disguises the smell of the pork.
Thanks for that recipe which I have written down in my cooking notebook. Its got everything I like in it so whats not to like! I brought a big bottle of Dill pickle mustard back from the US recently, now that is yummy as is the bottle of Chick a’ filet sauce
I have come across pork, or at least pork flavoured catfood wet mixes, in France and my then cats ate it without demur.
Though I think my current cat is the brother of Porridge’s…the first cat I’ve ever had who refuses sardines. And he’s not getting any tuna because when he did, I hsd to clean up 3 messes on the carpet.
I read years ago that cats don’t eat pork and had it confirmed by the vet. Obviously , the chicken thing poses a problem with the carnivore theory. But a little bit more research informs me that the high sodium and fat content of pork is unappealing to cats.
It’s because domestic cats come from the Middle East, where nothing eats pork. Cheetahs, very popular pets with the pharaohs (and my favourite animal) don’t eat pork either.
I made that up, I’m getting the hang of this fake news and conspiracy theory stuff
