I have travel insurance cover by way of an annual policy, not just for if I were to get ill but as you say I work on the house and the roof plus trees so I am covered at least up to the point the insurer is supposed to pay up!
With the caveat we are talking about insurance companies here

There was the EHIC and now there is the GHIC, though “Global” is an exaggeration of Johnsonian proportions. I wouldn’t bother with travel insurance within the EU or UK but in the States or futher afield definitely. It’s just wise IMO to choose your provider carefully.
I previously haven’t since living in france, but going further afield (not that I’ve done that recently) I’d be more concerned about repatriation.

hum house build repair and even maintenance may turn out to be excluded by the insurance cover as not a normal holiday activity… maybe even if not specifically excluded in the wording… Real lawyers on here may know better, of course
