Does humour work if taken to literal translation?
I used to like tractors but now I’m an extractor fan?
“Well, I’m sorry to hear that and I hope that one day your affinity for farm vehicles will be rekindled.”

Deranged Turnip meets Svelte Swede???
Can anybody root out the problem?
Male dominance of submissive female [behaviour of animals]
vs
A complementary pair-bond of equals [behaviour of the properly human]
We can tell the nature of the male / female mind by looking at the relationship they settle into.
Looks like the first lady and her unfortunate growth have their heads in the sand.
A mind with affinity for bureaucracy certainly has an inverse relationship to the higher things in life.
Just the first minute!
Note how Vogon and Donald d’Pizza Hutt look similar - important lesson there.
I’m no student or interpreter of political events but Simon Tisdall’s article in the Guardian on how/why Trump’s honeymoon in office is over, rings true for me.
I hope he’s right about the honeymoon being over, and I hope that the lesser-spineless-republican species will start growing a backbone.
David Allen Green on the money once again.
Yep.
Trump will gradually get bolder and bolder in ignoring constitutional limits.
Someone (Democratic senator, I think) on Twitter posted that “we have a year to save American democracy”.
It’s already too late.
Just in case you thought you were safe as a white European living in the US
I suspect not speaking English like a native won’t help.
FWIW around 2005/6 I visited the US with the company MD who is a UK citizen, and at EVERY passport check my Austrian passport would get me singled out for extra inspection/security checks. One might assume it was just unlucky, except I was travelling alongside a clear negative control who wasn’t selected once.
Should just have said “I wonder what my mate Arnie would thing of this
”
Joking aside what is happening in America right now is pretty scary - civil war a distinct possibility, indeed almost certainly would be actively welcomed by Trump as it would solidify the case for using emergency powers (which he has already abused) to avoid mid terms in 2026.
The age of heroes passes
We can only wonder where, and if, the spirit of ‘the few’ lives on.
I truly hope fears over the demise of democracy are wrong.
I hope my daughter uses her UK passport when she has to visit her New York office.
I see we’re on to the next stage and completely ignoring the rule of law.
Yes, that’s the same incident that @JohnH posted about earlier.
Hah, so he did ![]()
https://www.politico.com/news/2025/03/17/rasha-alawieh-deportation-026038
The rushed deportation of a Lebanese kidney transplant physician, despite her holding a US work visa and an outstanding habeas corpus petition for her release from border detention, represents a serious deterioration of human rights as well as the impartiality of US law.
Worrying also, subsequent further developments
In a court filing Sunday, a lawyer who agreed to represent Alawieh last week in the federal court case, John Freedman, said he and several colleagues at firm Arnold & Porter were seeking to withdraw from the case “as a result of further diligence.” He did not elaborate.
Is that “actually she’s not as innocent as portrayed”, or “the lawyers have been ‘got at’” I wonder?
I’m not sure but I’ll keep checking.
Looking at the headline
It might be that she was somewhat unwise. But note that the photos were in a “deleted items folder”. If you travel to the US it is best (and has been for a long time) to wipe devices before you enter the country.
At the moment, I think the wisest thing is simply not to go there if you can avoid it.
