:-)
Not all tyres are directional, Steve. When they are then they will have the mark 'outside' on the tyrewall and or an arrow with the mention 'rotation'. Tyres that have a symmetrical tread pattern are not directional but any tyre that has an asymmetrical pattern will be directional.
Brilliant! :-) Thank you again!!!
I like the sound of that Gretchen :)
Thanks for that, Gretchen -- brilliant stuff! And how right you are about the SFN Community!!
Well, I never knew that - although I do now see the logic. Thanks again, Brian - I am a little older and a little wiser :-)
Thanks, Steve - both for the reply and the content! I am not really sure how "committed" I am to buy the proposed tyres - but I will check out popgom as you suggest! Great stuff!! (And I had no idea it was possible to fit winter tyres "the wrong way round" either! Such a lot I don't know - and too blooming late to learn now :-)
Brilliant, James - thanks a bunch. I'll go find the logbook and check! Thanks again for your time!!
Glad about the foot - I wish you a speedy recovery (that sounds pompous - wasn't meant to sound like that!!!)
I wouldn't be happy with larger tyres - but as it was hissing down with rain yesterday I wasn't able to actually *see* what I might be buying and check the specs..
What a good job you have done setting up this site! And what a decent binch of folk you have attracted! It is great to be able to pose a question and get so many speedy and expert responses!!
Hi, G
I would be very interested in the address of your husbands site, my l200 needs shod and for some reason my wife's golf eats tyres!!
thanks W
Thanks, Gretchen... I would be most interested in the website!
Thanks for that Elaine! My existing tyres, are, I think, probably original - which makes them well over 7 years old. Definbitely time for action then!! Thanks again!
Thanks a million for that, Brian. I got "caught" a few years ago in Sarlat, when I hit a pothole, burst the tyre and the garage *insisted* I had to have two tyres "because it is illegal to have two of different makes"........
In view of your comments about the insurance, with which I agree, maybe I will take the proffered tyres as a short term measure and replace in the new year with something better.
Thanks again for time and advice!!
Can't help with the CT question but I did get a warning once that the winter tires on a car would fail the CT as they were fitted the wrong way round (I didn't know that there was a right/wrong way)
As far as prices are concerned, I got a price for tires on line from popgom.fr and then took it to the local tire centre that popgom proposed as their fitting partner who immediately matched the price. Stupid thing was that the previous week the same centre had quoted me prices that were 40/50% higher. All it took was a copy of the quote from the popgom site.
This might be useful Graham http://www.wheel-size.com/size/renault/espace/
Thanks Graham, healing nicely I think.
(I am not an expert and what I am about to say should be read as such!)
It's possible that you can fit a number of different size tyres on a rim and still be legal. Concerns might be that larger tyres will hit the wheel arches or cornering at full lock or when the shock absorbers are compressed.
When I say different size I mean width and height (The fist two numbers) not the size of the tyre aperture (the third number) which I expect cannot be messed with.
I understand that they must be the same on any one axle but could be a different make and year on the other. There is a date on the stamped information. For your own safety you should not be using tyres more than 7 years old.
That is what I did, James - but my French is hardly fluent! Thanks for your advice. I *was* surprised that he treated the matter so lightly!! Now I will go find an explanation of the ratings letters!! Thanks again, James - hope the foot is a tad more comfortable!!
I have it on good authority that the wrong type of tyre will fail a CT in France (dependant on the examiner of course). The size may not be the issue either, a vehicle of mine failed due to the the tyres not having the correct letter on them. I think the letter is something to do with the the speed rating. If I were you I would ask the actual examiner first if possible.
I'll keep this short. The tyres keep you on the grey bits. If you mess about and fit anything other than those recommended in your hand book you risk coming off the grey bits. Choice is yours.
