UK car permanently in France

You’ll need to Google it, puissance fiscale and the make and model of your car.

Check you can obtain a Certificate Of Conformance for the exact model of your car.

I’ve personally seen a CoC for an RHD Merc that clearly states “certificate valid for U.K. only” in the very small print at the bottom.

Look up an identical model on something like lacentrale.fr and it should display it. Or put details on here and I’ll take a look for you (make, model, year, fuel, engine size etc)

Look at french car websites and find a car with the same engine/ transmission- they will list the puisance fiscal

For example

Exactly :+1:

Carl and mark thank you that helps alot . I will get on with my search now knowing what i need to look for . Very informative and much appreciated

???

I brought in a Porsche Boxster last year and all it cost me was a set of headlamps and the immatriculation - maybe 1000€, I cannot remember. A walk in the park and all in maybe 4k cheaper than the nearest equivalent in France.

Was it a Japanese grey import ?

Grey imports are not spec’d to European standards and need a government inspection and all normally CE marked items, like seatbelts, lights etc have to be approved or changed, emissions testing and all safety items need further tests to be done etc- a whole lot of agro, money and possibly, the vehicle will not be approved at the end. The same with camper van conversions, if the conversion wasn’t done to EU requirements by an authorised converter who issues a certificate of conformity, then everything needs to be tested and approved

Sorry to be a pain but can we have the thread title amended to “UK car permanently in France”?

i keep reading it as “UK car permanently in furnace” and it’s driving me potty.

I am extremely glad my car is RHD otherwise I would not be able to drive.

It is an automatic and thus my duff left hand isn’t fighting the gearstick nor taking the strain on the steering wheel… that hand just does the best it can

But, most important of all, I know how near falling into the ditch we are…

Unlike me, OH is a clever chappy… we’ve been to UK, taking his own RHD with us… and he switched from this country to that country… and back again … without a wobble… and didn’t land us in the ditch either… hurrah.

and… he knows how to overtake… when safe to do so… and only went a little over one or two speed limits…

as his co-pilot I tried to keep him on the straight and narrow…

we’re all different and some will hate a RHD in France… and some will love it…

EDIT: when necessary our garage lends us a glorious car… same model only LHD. OH has no problem.

Having briefly toyed with the idea of making it match …

done

So ive done what was suggested found a car on la centrale that was more or less the same as mine and been on the website that provides an estimate and its come back as 545 euros … so if ive got everything right when filling in the form then im happy to bring my car over … i thought it was going to be alot more .

Are there any other costs involved ? Apart from insurance . Service . Mot etc

Something like a Toyota Legrand, Mazda Bongo, Nissan Figaro, Mazda Eunos etc- cars that were not built for use in Europe but can be imported from Japan or the middle east and registered in the UK but not the EU

If you don’t have an ANTs account or access vis the gouv website, it might be a lot easier to get the whole registration done by someone like Mark Rimmer, who does it for a living and at very modest cost. There are a lot of “hand holders” on social media, trying to make a fast buck, whilst not understanding the system themselves, so choose based on solid recommendation, not on who contacts you! I think Mark Rimmer can be found on facebook

I think you misread my question. I was thinking Adam if he had successfully imported a grey import as that seemed to be implied but wasn’t clear.

What is a Japanese “grey” import? I imported it from Japan yes, but grey? Dunno!

The only items on the cert of non-conformity from Porsche were headlamps and fog light…

A “grey” import is one made through unofficial channels i.e. not via the manufacturer’s appointed local agents.

It’s most often applied to cameras and electronics where buying such devices from (say) a Hong Kong retailer makes them a fair bit cheaper than from a UK or EU retailer.

The problem with it is that you don’t get the official warranty and may have to send the item back to China if it needs repair or replacement.

Then yes, it was grey I guess! There are sales shops specialising in exporting cars from Japan. They give a comprehensive overview and arrange a CIF to Le Havre, after a check with the manufacturer for a non-conformity check.

Anyway, all very simple resulting in a dead cheap 25 year old car with 40k kms, like new and never driven on a.road sprayed with salt
