That’s why I asked…
It’s a kind of ray-fish, a bottom-feeder with a gelatinous skeleton and brownish flesh with a slightly muddy taste (said to be a bit like scallops). Fishermen usually treat it as waste, but some estuary fishermen land it and it sells in East End fish-and-chip shops to ravenous East-Enders on the way home from the Queen Vic.
It’s wings are full of softish-but-devilishly sharp bones and you suck the flesh off them and guzzle it down the weasel and stoat.
Wash down with half a pint of mild.

Lots of people do. It’s like Marmite, love it or loathe it. There was a fish and chip shop in Hackney Wick in the 1950s when I lived there, it had an illuminated flashing sign “Skate! Skate!! Skate!!!”. Last time I was in the Wick (Boxing Day 2013, had a pint at the Tiger with my son, we were the only customers there and they were preparing to close at 5.30 pm) the Skate!!! sign was still there.
But Hackney still tugs at my heartstrings. I did my SRN training at Hackney Hospital '56-'59.
No one should be eating skate. It is on the red list.
Although Alice Weidel is a lesbian, the AfD party is right wing and against gay marriage. As a gay man I just can’t work out why she is part of it.
