Last night’s ceilidh was weird. Initially incredibly unresponsive crowd, they did gradually thaw with good dancing eventually, but everyone just wanting to drink and talk to begin.
I once videoed a Chinese wedding in London where (for some unfathomable reason) they had a ceilidh band.
It was very comical watching hundreds of Chinese folk trying to do Scottish dance moves. ![]()
And all without the benefit of alcohol - it was a “dry” wedding!
There was a Vide grenier today. I do like them, but there is a lot of tat.
Is it a French tradition to have food and drink at every such event? Is it the only way to get people to attend?
Yes, it’s a money maker. And the quality pf the offer can influence how popular the event is. If it’s just Jacques on a plancha and Bernadette on the fryer with cheap stuff from Lidl, then will get custom over lunch time but not much more. I’ve been to some with a choice of much better stuff that were heaving all day. And of course now you have the food trucks.
If you give blood you don’t just get a biscuit and a cup of tea, you get sandwiches with ham and paté and so on
Some people do just seem to go for the food …and drink.
You can give blood? They won’t have mine because I was in the UK for more than one year between 1980 and 1996.
It must rule a lot of people on this forum out.
I can’t as I lived in the UK for over a year between 1980 and 1996. I go to give moral support to friends who do though (and don’t eat the sandwiches as I don’t deserve them).
Life is what happens when you are busy making other plans!
Just spent the last 4 hours with Chatgpt trying to make sense of why OH’s Thunderbird cannot send or receive emails. Looks like his webmail account has been blocked by Orange.
Not how I was expecting to spend my afternoon!
I thought maybe the rules had changed. As we are up to 30 years since 1996. And it was said that CJD had an incubation period of up to 30 years.
I bet Selwyn Gummers daughter who was given a burger made with British beef, to prove they were harmless, has let out a huge sigh of relief.
It was what turned me vegetarian. Well, the fact that farmers near where my sister lived in Cumbia were still feeding their cattle with the banned feed 2 years after the ban. I lost all my trust in farmers at that point I’m afraid.
Which one of the Tracey boys did you marry? Can’t be Gordon as he was the comms whiz.
Not Brains either I suspect. ![]()
(with huge respect to Sue’s OH)
We’re still in Carcassonne. OH looked out of the window a few minutes ago and spotted smoke not far from here. Two firefighting helicopters are there and flying past us to take water from the river Aude to drop on the fire. Fingers crossed it isn’t a big fire.
Ahh, you see you’re not a Celt. The behaviour of Celts to Austrians can be confusing. My MIL was from the Vorarlberg. A lovely woman but she lived in Ireland for forty years and never understood the culture.
For example, don’t forget that fada ![]()
I gave it once and fainted, they said, in a caring way, don’t come back ![]()
Another ceilidh tonight over near Shipston on Stour. We’re on from 9.15 and hopefully it will be cooler by then. I was due to meet up with a bunch of film photographers Saturday, but we’ve postponed it due to the heat.
Ah, too far over 20°C?
30’C in my home office this afternoon, and we’re in a slightly cooler valley compared to much of the south east. I’d guess it was around 35’C outside earlier this afternoon, and our brief walk after lunch was quite harsh in the sunny patches.
Sorry, I missed the joke. I guess we’ll have to wait and see what develops.
They won’t take my blood or my wife’s because of mad cow disease… unfortunately we never went back to give blood.
