I read Kindle books every day. It is many years since I used an actual Kindle device. I simply use the free software that Amazon provides to read Kindle content on my phone, tablet or PC. Whatever device you use, I like to make use of the amazing free library facilities that Amazon provides. Everything is stored in your central library in the Amazon cloud somewhere. You can then download any file to your local library on your device (Kindle or phone) to be read offline if you wish.
As well as my current novel, I save all my manuals for various stuff like car, camera, dishwasher, central heating etc.so that they are always in my pocket for whenever I need them. (Just download the .pdf and save it to Kindle)
You can have any number of shelves in your local library on your phone (Amazon unimaginatively call them categories). I have shelves in my local library for novels to read, manuals, recipes, and nonfiction.
If you have Alexa, you can even ask it to read your book for you but, for me, that is a step too far.
One useful tip is to display a recipe from your Kindle library on your device then stand it in the corner of your workspace. No need for notes or printouts etc.
My only grumbles about kindle are that the paper white I bought my wife about 5 years ago now has around 5-6 hours battery life, and that content in your ‘library’ can be deleted at any time if Amazon so chooses, even if you paid for it.
There’s a lot of free books available too, via Gutenberg and other sites, and managed through Calibre software.
I am also a huge fan of my Kindle and it’s perfect to take on trips like the Compostelle. Once I forgot mine in the plane, and noticed it first when I was very close to the point of no return. Man, I ran
As you know I’m not keen on Amazon so don’t have s Kindle. I have a free, open source app on my phone called Cool reader. I’ve used it for years and dh just downloads free books for me. It has night settings do is very dim for reading for bed or in the middle of the night. I get the battery thing but I just charge my phone overnight and not a problem. Saves carrying 2 things!
My sight is getting worse for reading, books I need to put my glasses on, ditto reading most websites. I’m fine with my books though as I have set the font bigger than normal and can adjust the light yo conditions as well. The background is a light brown colour, not sure if that helps.
Hi i have no idea the area you are in, im 03. Have you thought of asking at your local vet if anyone needs their dog walked while they work? Or perhaps offering half a day at your local spa…I did do this many years ago but once I started staying for the school vacations I got a dog. Jodie is 13 now and we live semi rural. She has been my best pal and Ive enjoyed many a solo outing/meal with her (i think my OH, who joined us once he retired, often felt like an interloper!!)
France, to me, is so much more welcoming of families and dogs. I stay with my habit of asking, not assuming, she is welcome in restaurants, as i agree it is the owners perogative and others may not appreciate jodies company. In her defense she curls up, sleeps while we eat and doesnt bother anyone.
Yes having a dog, or any pet, is a tie, especially for those spontaneous moments but we have a great group of friends who are happy to step in from time to time.
Kindle Users a request of help please. My OH has bought me a book but its not come up on my kindle but in his phone. Kindle version and i do have space. Any tips on how to cancel it as he has tried transferring the book and now its disappeared! Thanks all
I take read books, three at a time, and put them in one of the two village boite à livres for anyone to enjoy. Someone snaffles them. I know because I check! (Except ‘Elinore Oliphant is Completely Fine. I expect they flipped through and found it too depressing, as did I.)
Hi Caz,
Our beloved dog passed away several years ago. He was happy to lie on the floor under the table in restaurants, and we were also very happy that he was positively welcomed in our favourite local restaurant.
As for the walking… I like your suggestion of talking to the vet about dog walking. I’d love to do that but I have no credentials ! Unfortunately our SPA is too far away to be practical. Our dog was already fairly elderly when he appeared on our doorstep, and after a few years walking any distance became difficult for him. An over ambitious walk sometimes ended with him and his 25kg having to be carried home !
A couple of nights ago we ate in a local taginerie (probably not a word ) and I was delighted to see there the same small black cat we’d met a few years ago as a kitten. Even more delighted when she settled into my lap
