Windows automatic updates not working

LOL Nice one Mike :)

My view on the different browsers is that I use them all.

I do use Chrome more than any other browser though.

Why Google when so many people say 'But they track your movements and sell the data'

A good question and I am glad you asked.

They (people wot make browsers) all track our internet usage to a greater or lesser extent (as do ISP's) and as I have nothing to hide I do not care. No, I really do not care.

In fact TRACK ME. I want the adds served to me to be targeted and useful.

If we want to (usefully) use the internet then we have to allow ourselves to be tracked in some way or other.

Anybody who tells you 'They cant track me' is (for a zillion reasons) frankly talking poop

Wendy posted this on the 11th.
"Greetings everyone!! Well, after a scary couple of days when I thought I'd given my computer a lobotomy, it seems to be working more less normally. I restored it back to 2012 and uninstalled Firefox. Have reinstalled Firefox and can now access thinks like Facebook without the whole thing grinding to a halt. So fingers crossed, my problem is solved thanks everyone for your excellent advice!!"

But you have accidentally walked into Fight Club. There is blood on the ceiling, as well as the floor and walls. No place for a nice girl like you. Let's both walk away quietly and close the door........

All good points Ian and you are obviously very conversant with the different features on offer.

I'm not Carl, but what the hell. I think people can and should use whichever browser they want to, and not be bound by relationships to the OS. Personally I use Chrome at the moment, mostly, because I like the way it's integrated with the other Google stuff. I originally switched to Chrome from Firefox because it was way ahead of both FF and IE at the time, and Firefox was on the road to bloatland. Now, however, IE has made a bit of a comeback, Firefox is rather leaner than it has been, and it's Chrome that is getting bloated. On my tablet I have Chrome, Firefox and Opera, and I use whichever of them fits the task best. Sometimes the choice is down to the extensions or plugins that are available, sometimes it's just that one likes or dislikes the UI.

So given that browsers keep evolving and leapfrogging one another I would advise people simply to use the ones they like, but to look every so often at how the others are doing in case there might be something better.

Greetings earthlings. I am up to my neck in work and haven't got time tonight to read through the previous 7 pages of comments. Was anyone able to help Wendy?

Some time ago, a member made disparaging comments about another member's spelling mistakes, and I strongly requested that members refrain from doing this. Who knows if the original poster had dyslexia or another learning disability. I would say the same here. People use whatever means they have to access the internet and if they do not possess the knowledge or money to run or upgrade their equipment, then so be it. If we were all so knowledgeable about computers, this group would not be needed. Just saying...

Scully. Given that I assume I am the Mr "Rats Arse" you refer to, this time I will reply instead of the usual ' no comment' your usual veiled insults to me demand.

Where exactly did I Insult your wooden car or any other car come to that? Why are you again lashing out at me? Simple questions! Do you think you can manage simple answers? Your endless insults, name calling & denigration of Windows & all of us who use it is becoming laughable as does your put down of anybody who has the temerity to disagree with you. I'm sure you have a lot of advice to offer us luddites but do you really have to be so nasty with it?

Nowithstanding your reaction to my “sad” comment Carl, do you he any views on the more substantive matter of my advice regarding Browsers?

Thanks for that James. Terry’s article is interesting and well written however since I have been using email as my primary mode of communication with collegues and clients since 1985 I don’t think I represent his target audience. But, it is a good reminder and I don’t post lightly and believe what I say. Not least of all because I post under my own name and thus my reputation is at risk. Since the average person doesn’t care anymore about their operating system than their make of kettle I doubt that I upset too many. Until I retired in 2011, professional reasons prevented me from publically slating the buggy, virius ridden MS OSs. Happly I’m now free of that constraint and can openely say that I cannot see any reason why one would not us Linux (free) OpenOffice (free) and Firefox (free) rather than Windows apart whatever machine one buys probably has it already installed. In fact many older machines that struggle to run Windows go like the clappers running Linux. This means that older machines can be reycyled, for example to less advantaged school children. Somthing I have done myself in my neighbourhood.

So that’s where I’m comming from. Now what about Mr. “Rats Arse” insulting my wooden car

John, I would like to suggest that before you post again, especially in this thread, that you read the following relevant article written by our very own Terry Williams. Heaving read through some of your SFN postings I wonder if your anti Microsoft stance ruffles a few feathers. Please don't get me wrong, you are very entitled to hold that opinion, my point being that those who use the Windows operating system (the majority of SFN visitors in fact) may find your delivery a little condescending and that is possibly reflected in the tone of some of their replies.

Thanks

James

1 I have a Morgan (2012 RAF blue +4 Super Sport).
2 I’m sorry for anybody that needs to use a crude term like “rat’s arse” to express themselves on a public forum.

Bravo Carl. I also use windows 'cos a/ it's what I've got b/ I don't know any different & c/ even if I did I couldn't give a rat's arse 'cos I'm not interested & as long as what I've got works I'm happy. It's a bit like someone telling me to get a Morgan 'cos he likes cars made out of wood. Who cares!! I'm a self confessed, card carrying, computer luddite & read stuff about windows in an attempt to actually learn something about what I've got. I also don't ask questions here about windows any more & find more helpful advice elsewhere on the internet.

Probably James, but one doesn’t want to run to Mummy. “I didn’t get to where I am today by running to Mummy” (Reggie Perrin 1976).

Hi Carl,

Let me address you points in reverse order.

I’ve no doubt that my attitude has no impact anybody who would want to post here. I’m not that egotistical

I wasn’t aware that you were “answering questions about PCs” and if you are and helping people with PC problems I think that’s great so please don’t be offended by my views on MS.

Finally, I started my career working on Operating Systems and I still have a passion for them (sad isn’t it) and Windoz is a dog. It was a dog, it is a dog and will always be a dog. The fact is that many people have that dog and if you can help them house train it is great.

It would be even better if you just contacted me in the first place so that the admin team can take a look. This is a better approach that going at it in the comments.

Catherine, if the description is accurate then sobeit. I used the word snide and if you care to check the defintion of same you will see I was absolutly correct. I accept your rules and think they’re totally appropriate but IMHO it would be better to address those that are making snide remarks that those that call them out.

Would it be possible for you to refrain from calling those of Us who use windows "Sad"?

In fact while I'm at it. If you despise windows so much.. Why are you commenting on a thread about windows?

I only answer questions about PC's because that is my bag. Why don't you try and do the same with questions regarding Apple products?

A wild and crazy idea I know but give it a try because your attitude stops people from wanting to post anything in this group.

YOU are killing it

Yes, perhaps you’re right James but I think some folk can be a bit dismissive and supercilious on occasions. What I post, for better or worse, is what I believe. Many others so the same and I think that’s what makes SFN a great resource. I’m happy in my skin (as we say) some others seem to be less so

IMHO one should use the browser that is “native” to the OS one uses. I.E. if one is sad enought to use Windoz then use Internet explorer, if one is enlighted and uses Mac OS then Safari, if one is a linux user Forefox. There is no IMHO reason (ever) to use Chrome unless you specifically want Google to track your interney activity and sell it for thier financial benefit.

Hi Wendy

Glad to read your laptop is working

For what it's worth I had terrible problems earlier this year to the point that it crashed and my only option was to format/re-partition the drive

And I had not backed up!!!!!

I ended up being advised by lot of people to move to Chrome and I have to say it is working really well!
