Would you go in…..?

I was the same, re-read Biggles, Famous Five, Bulldog Drummond etc, there was a lot of head shaking going on reading them.

That’s why I loved The Swallows and The Amazons, because Nancy especially wasn’t - except when the Great Aunt (I think that’s who she was) came.

Seems perhaps I had an unusual childhood (in more ways than one  )

With my elder brother, I climbed trees and ran riot on the Common, along the beaches and clambering up the cliffs… our “gang” was a mixed bunch of girls and boys…

then around the age of 11 onwards, I was suddenly expected to be ladylike…  … in a new area of UK, at a new school and with a whole new range of adventures ahead…

Exactly the same

Not sure George would think herself second class in famous five !?! :flushed:

Not on your life.

It looks somewhere for something with big teeth to live.

Probably not. The issue is that many of the children’s books of the time did not reflect changing attitude between sexes.

And is that good or bad? I would rather stay with famous five

If you found this entrance to a cave in the garden of your new house would you go in?

Entrance looks a tad low and the knees are a bit shot this evening after a very hilly 4hr walk, but fortunately I’ve a yoga bunny wife who’s small and supple…

Or ersatz boys, like George.
EB herself was rather awful apparently but she got lots of people reading.

George was not second class inthe stories. Things are different now whether for good or bad. I liked her. She had balls in a boy’s world

Unsure EB was awful. Not what we would think of ok now. Long time ago with different perspectives. Nothing was wrong and maybe nothing wrong now. Justperspective. Anyway loved famous five!

She was apparently awful in real life, there was some hooha about it I seem to remember when I was a teenager. There was a fashion for bashing her too. I thought she was very much of her time (and found the English set-up fascinating, eg I was amazed by people having neighbours as I didn’t). I don’t think I read any but the famous five and the whatever of adventure series. But I still think anyone who can get millions of children reading can’t be all bad.

Weren’t the Bunkle books by Margaret Pardoe? Blyton did a series on ‘Binkle and Flip’ - anthropomorphic rabbits…

My gran had the whole series and loved Margot Pardoe, she used to read them to us at bedtime, I think I still have Bunkle and Belinda somewhere.
