Think it is Ian Holm??
No. It was - “In the 1996 film Loch Ness, the character of Tommy was played by Johnny Irving, according to the full cast list on IMDb”.
Ian Holm was in the film playing a full part. Johnny Irving and Patrick Troughton, to me, looked similar in appearance. My mistake.
His & Hers on Netflix….
Good short series. Bit bloody, but I teresti g til the end…
Netflix has Seven Dials (Agatha Christie), three episodes. It seems good so far.
I thought we were talking about Nessa there, since I’ve started watching Run Away on Netflix, the new Harlan Coben series. Ruth Jones plays a private detective.
Like most Harlan Coben stuff, I can’t really decide if it’s for me. I find it more and more difficult to suspend disbelief when people do really stupid things to progress the plot.
We gave up. We usually do with his stuff. ![]()
Yes, have watched a few but find them disjointed a lot of the time and you forget who is who and who did what to whom etc.
We watched Gosford Park last night. It’s a 2001 film and many of the actors look so young then. But we didn’t really enjoy it.
The costumes, furnishings etc were really lovely and the upstairs/downstairs culture was a good portrayal but I couldn’t work out who committed the murder. Was I supposed to or was that the idea of the story.![]()
Yes. You might want to watch it again - it’s worth it.
Or I can DM you and put you out of your misery.
Put me out of my (our) misery please Sue ![]()
OK, I’ll send you a DM. It is worth watching again in the future because the production values are so amazing and it’s what led to Downton Abbey and it’s lovely to see Helen Mirren, et al. And of course Maggie Smith, trying out an early version of Violet Crawley.
I did notice that Julian Fellowes was one of the writers.
My absolute favourite bit of the film is when the valets are all arriving with the luggage and Helen Mirren as housekeeper is sorting them out below stairs as everyone is squeezing past one another to get to their respective employers’ rooms. And the wonderful bit where the valets learn that while they are there they will be known by their employer’s name.
Some of Julian’s writing is a bit banal, but one cannot fault how well he takes us into that extraordinary world of upstairs/downstairs, which he knew.
Other favourite bit - when Ivor Novello is singing after dinner (especially Land that Might Have Been) and Maggie Smith says “don’t encourage him” when they clap (so Downton Abbey!)
I watched the remake of The Running Man last night. If you thought the original Arnie one was good, this is ten times better and I was worn out at the end from alll the twists and turns and how relevant Stephen King had remade it to fit in with today’s society. Well worth two hours plus if you like action.
The second series of “The Night Manager” is proving to be that rare sequel which matches the quality of the original.
I need to watch it - from the summaries I have read it takes a somewhat different approach to the plot and is more like 1/10th as good but I will try to keep an open mind.
Talking of Helen Mirren I really am overdue to re-watch Excalibur.
Yes its more of how it would happen today rather than an arena event and very gritty whereas you knew with Arnie that he would win whatever happened along the way
Although I’m enjoying watching the 2nd NM I find it less credible then the 1st which is annoying. Now waiting for the next episode on Amazon Prime Fr.
Credibility in Drama is always a bit difficult, isn’t it? To be fair fiction is rarely especially plausible and/or relies on improbable coincidences, unlikely behaviour and deus ex machina to keep the plot moving along in the direction the writer wants.
I guess that the main thing is not to be too implausible within the world that has been created - which is why I struggled to enjoy the first couple of episodes of Patience - the main characters reaction seemed very implausible (though I have noted that her autism waxes and wanes to fit the demands of the plot). I found the last episode pretty exasperating as well as it seems totally unlikely that they would send a SWAT team in when the life of a civilian was at stake, or complete a disciplinary process so quickly for that matter.
