PM Theresa May says there will be no attempt to remain inside EU

"The future looks great" - really?

Are you being serious? If so, I am so gobsmacked that I'm going to have to go and sit down with a cup of tea, get the smelling salts out and fan myself until I recover.

Long-term, yes, I believe so.

"I think the cherry-picking is being done by those who have left their precious UK for some reason, but who still want to have 100% of the rights enjoyed by the people who actually live there."

Wow. Speechless.

Want to join me on the sofa with the smelling salts Valerie?

I'm very much pro- European and sad, like most people on this forum that the majority voted to leave the EU but with my hand on my heart I have to say that GB hardly embraced the EU or EEC or whatever it has been called, over the decades. GB is an island and the majority of it's inhabitants have an island mentality which has prevented GB from being totally immersed in the European ideal. Britain wanted 'in' but with reservations and get-outs. OK, Brexit is an 'inconvenience' for most expats resident in France on this and other forums but i'm sure that if the same people were resident in the UK and not France not many would give a monkeys about EU membership.

'I'm all right Jack' because I took out French citizenship twenty years ago but i'm sure I too would be bitter that my French dream was under threat.

Shove up shove up and chuck over the sal volatile!

The future's so bright- I've gotta wear shades.

John, I'm happy living and working in France too, I just think it's wrong for the UK. Others have used it too but it can still be over turned by the people - CPE for example. Franchouillard - A little tongue-in-cheek self-derision rather than looking for flattery ;-)

I agree in the examples you give of over-inflatted proctectionist workers but my point is that we needn't just turn the page quietly and accept it. We too can make a noise if we don't agree! I think the EU could be better off without the UK too, at least it will, for better or for worse, be able to move forward in it's more socialist ideas. I still believe, and hope for the UK that I am wrong, that the UK will not get what it wants from the EU and will be worse off, vertainly in the short to medium term after any eventual Brexit. Time will tell!

As for cherry picking - you're so way off the mark, my remarks were aimed squarly at the UK's future, not mine which is independant of that (apart from the right to remain in France of course!)

Any thoughts on long term? Is it decades or years?

How long did it take to recover from the 2008 devaluation of the GBP?

I think I'd need a glass of something as well. Mulling over what rights I'd gain following Brexit if I lived in the UK but I'm blank.

I've tried but I can't - what rights would I enjoy in the UK if I lived there and are you talking before or after Brexit?

The point is Peter that Parliament must debate and ratify and the the Lords have already said they will not endorse a Bill which will mean exit. Constitutionally it is only a Poll and that's an opinion. The government is not necessarily bound by that opinion. Fact.

Valerie, here it is. I have a friend on the legal team and they are well funded and will be raising more via crowd funding. I hope it is of interest to the intelligent in this forum. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/expat/news/brexit-expats-launch-high-court-action-that-could-delay-referend/

Yes Chris, I understand that but the Lords allowed the EU Referendum Act 2015 to be passed which makes it legally binding. If the Lords decide to refuse the outcome to be ratified then that's a different constitutional kettle of fish I imagine.

Oh come on daaahhling:

Post Brexit, we will get the empire back, there will be no waiting time in A&E, all those libraries that have been shut due to consecutive Conservative govt cuts will miraculously re-open, the trains will run on time, free school milk will be reinstated. And Lady Di will rise from the dead.

Yes!

and there has to be more colonies to be found!

Ha, no, apart from all those - John, JOHN, what rights are you talking about that I'd keep if I lived there?

Thanks Chris - I'll take a look at that.

I'm not sure it does - the Act was passed to provide for the referendum to be held.

Summary of the European Union Referendum Act 2015

A Bill To make provision for the holding of a referendum in the United Kingdom and Gibraltar on whether the United Kingdom should remain a member of the European Union.

And the briefing paper speaks for itself really ...
