Which mower should I buy?

So, which word would be acceptable to 'His Vicness' ?

Have a look at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D-OQR5zu_J4. JC got a right rollicking for using that word. Yeah I know, rubbish British tele. ;-)

sorry, you just lost me !

Apparently it's not PC to denigrate our Asian brothers by using that word. ;-)

I have quite a big slope in the front garden (probably why my knees are knackered !). I bought a Honda belt driven mower in 2005 and it's still working well despite the slopes. The belt-drive motor packed in about three years ago so I changed it and iut's been brill ever since. I used the same mower professionally for many years without problem. Honda will cost a bit more but it could well save you money later on, well in my case anyway.

The main problem I have with mowers on our sloping ground is the transmission box, I am now on 3rd mower because the plastic gears have given up the ghost. Try and get one with a belt drive if possible.

Yeah but Saab are also no longer with us & that wasn't all Darwins fault ;-)

Like all things small engines have their fans - I have a B & S which has also given at least 25 years trouble free service!

Applying Darwin to business, B & S are still in business while Tecu are not.

Thanks John, don't know how I missed that one in my ebay searches

Thanks Mark

Obviously mark there are different models but I just replaced the pull start on my 5.5hp Tecu and whilst I was at the same on my rotavator another Tecu. I know they did a series which sold via Sears in the US and they were weak engines by all accounts so maybe they percolated through to the EU, Wolf used Tecu's on the cart I showed earlier.

I had also rebuilt two B & S's which had both overheated on the exhaust port side and the pistons sheared in two vertically. The dealer in Sevenoaks said they aren't what they used to be because they had to lean out the mix to make EU emission standards. It's often the case that old designs can't make new specs and problems arise. The Hondas and Kwakas just don't seem to have issues.

Just my personal experience - as a garagiste who reluctantly repairs mowers when I really have to, it is the Tecumseh equipped ones with irrepairable pull starts, smokey knocking engines & carbs that have odd broken bits. Briggs engines are a little better in the fact that spare cranks & gasket sets can be bought off the shelf easily. I'm sure others will have had a different experience, like these lads on an American site - http://www.city-data.com/forum/garden/1822769-briggs-stratton-vs-tecumseh-engines-3.html

A knock off B & S, how so, pistons, rods, crank. It's not as if B & S are the Mercedes of engines, more like the Trabant.

A popular engine in the US, some have an oil pump which is a technological leap forward compared to B & S. Yes now defunct but parts are still available as tooling is still around. The trans axles are in more mowers being Peerless Co which was sold off to Husquvana. They were going to start production up again as the new company was Tecumseh Power. New engines are still available.

Amazing the power of advertising, B & S are very popular, bit like McDonalds but that isn't exactly food.

Can anyone find me a crank for a Kohler K181?

I bought it, hopefully it will tide me over until I can get the Wheelhorse back up and running. Seems to work fine for the moment, fingers crossed!

Agree with you there Mark had experience with the smaller engines bloody nightmare, i thought they were defunct but parts available or patterned anyway via Ebay or USA

Personally I have found these engines a real pain - a knock off B & S engine without the parts backup.

I'm sure that someone will disagree, though

Thanks Vic, will do
