10 year residency, but working and living

Hello…. Sorry if this has been covered..

1. I’ve got a 10 year residency, but am considering going to the uk for a couple of years. If I work there do I just fill in the amount on french tax form each year ?

2. If I work on Jersey but residing in the uk does that affect anything?

3. I believe if I work in Jersey (salaried) whilst living in France I’d pay my taxes and NI there and then social charges NI to URSSAF here as well…

So would residing in the uk cut out the extra payments? I’m happy to pay my dues, just not so viable if paying twice.

Thanks

If you are physically in the UK and fiscally resident there when working you pay taxes there.

Your 10 year card will allow you to be outside France for a certain period of time without loosing your right to residencey here, so you can come back.

I know nothing about Jersey except it has odd rules.

You would ideally want, and need to become non resident in France and resident in the UK, so that only the UK is taxing you on your earnings. If non resident in France you would not report your UK earnings on your French return. You would probably need good prior professional advice in France and the UK to consider the details of your proposed move.. Great care in terms of timing, duration, location etc would be needed to make this work.

Assuming you are UK resident, non resident in France, as above, you would be liable to Jersey tax and social security - the UK will give you credit for Jersey tax paid against your UK tax liability. If your overall UK tax liability is higher, you will have to pay the difference to the UK.UK NI is most unlikely to be due.

Yes, you would pay Jersey tax and NI. As a French resident you would also be liable to French tax on the same income but France will give you a credit for Jersey tax paid. I doubt you would pay French social security assuming you have a Jersey employer,.but you will be liable for c9% French social charges (prélèvements sociaux, like CSG, CRDS) which are technically not social security..

You would need to have an appetite or tolerance for considerable complexity to successfully manage your proposals (!) but they are probably doable…

A lot of good questions. The Jersey scenario is more complex as there is not a full tax tresty between Jersey and France as there is between Uk and France so you may well need specialist advice.

For your France/Uk scenarios you also need to think through where your family are as well - the residency rules are not symmetrical and if your family stay in France then likely the tax treaty comes into play…
