Oy, don’t forget Ireland
Going to Baltimore in the autumn.
Didn’t know the Irish had a Boston, I know Boston MA’s a very Irish city, but did the name come from there - surely not Boston’s too old?
Just checked, it’s derived from Boston, Lincs.
Yes, I knew of the Lincs connection, was just being mischievous. I only knew of the Irish Boston because I drove through it a long while ago.
Was it More than a feeling?
Still one of my favourite albums.
The kind douanier who sorted out the importation of our car had a copy of that on his wall.
We immediately bonded.
‘And these people marry each other.’
True.
I remember a meeting at the U of Ulster for a collaborative AHRC (Arts & Humanities’ Research Council) project funding application where mention arose of the local waterfront redevelopment that was going to be called ‘the Titanic Quarter’. I glibly suggested that didn’t seem a very auspicious name, to which one of the Belfast academics replied, “That ship was in perfectly good condition when we handed it over to the English.”
Yesterday our toaster completely failed to pop up at all. We were only left with the nuclear option Incineration.
Being an honorary Yorkshireman (by marriage and previous emigration) I could not bring myself to consign such an expensive gadget to the decheterie.
I have it connected to a smart plug. This now makes it the smartest toaster in the world.
Alexa, Toast well done
Alexa, toast lightly done
Alexa, toast crumpets
Alexa, Mik’s toast. … who’s laughing now?
PS @billybutcher feel free to move this post to the “Best ideas ever” thread if you feel it is more appropriate. : tongue in cheek emoji :
I was given a very nice subwoofer but it had a problem where the auto power switching was quite unreliable, a problem that model has had since new.
I was quite pleased with myself that I opened it up and bypassed the switching relay, hooked it up to a smart socket and set up a routine on Home Assistant such that it switches on and off with the surround sound amplifier. Frankly, it was driving me mad with it’s random pops and bangs as it switched on and off so it was close to getting binned.
