A nation of animal lovers? Britain on the brink of a kitten crisis

Britain on the brink of a kitten crisis, warns Blue Cross

Are we British really a nation of animal lovers? This report just out from one of the UK's leading animal charities, The Blue Cross reiterates the sad situation here in France, a situation that has become much worse over the past 2 years.

As the number of unwanted kittens arriving at their rescue centres grows by over a third, Blue Cross is urging pet owners to get their cats neutered.

So far this year they’ve seen an alarming 33 per cent rise in the number of kittens taken in across the UK. They are also caring for an ever-increasing number of pregnant cats, leading to the number of kittens born at Blue Cross centres nearly doubling in the last five years."

The Blue Cross reiterates the sad situation here in France and europewide.

this year sees my 10 anniversary of cat protection in France, year upon year we see more and more abandons, cruelty and lack of consideration for the needs of animals and this is a situation that has become much worse over the past 2 years. At Chats du Quercy Cat rescue and rehoming Charity in the Midi-Pyrénées we have not only seen this huge increase in cats being abandonned, but also a considerable drop in adoptions.

We believe, as do many other animal charities worldwide, that social media has impacted the world of animal rescue, in most cases, not for the better.

At Chats du Quercy, we currently have 1 mum with her 5 kittens in care(photo above), plus 9 more kittens not quite ready for adoption, plus many adorable adult cats that are ready and have been waiting far too long for the right family to come along. This is a plea for anyone who is thinking of taking on a cat, please think of the consequences, cost implications and whether you have the right environemnt for the cat's needs. If you want to adopt, please think about your local rescue facility and the cats they have, these were no doubt someone's pet at one stage, and make great additions to the family. you are assured too, that you not only save one cat, but help the charity to take on and help another less fortunate too.
