According to the Beeb’s website, airbnb owners will no longer be able to make guests strip beds, do the washing up or take out the rubbish. I’m not clear if that’s only when there’s a cleaning fee.
We rented an apartment last weekend and the only thing the owner asked us to do was to take out the rubbish, but we also did the washing up and put things away. It didn’t seem too arduous. There was no cleaning fee and we’ve hardly ever seen that with Booking.com but maybe they’ll follow airbnb and bring in the same rule. Or is it more a North American thing than a European one?
Asking guests to leave the place as they found it does not seem unreasonable if there is no cleaning fee.
And expecting guests to just walk out of the door where there is a cleaning fee seems realistic.
But telling owners they can’t ask guests to tidy if they also can’t (either by policy or because “no one else does”) charge a cleaning fee just means it will go on the rental - which removes choice all round.
Whenever I’ve rented a gite in France (which has usually been through AirBnB) I have always done the washing up and basic tidying - as Billy said, essentially “leaving it as I found it” - but if there is a cleaning fee I would not expect to have to do more than that.
I.e. not have to strip beds or do vacuuming or a deep clean.
Crazy. It will make AirBnB prices rise (which are already often high) and blur even further the distinction between them and hotels.
Yes it should be very clear what is expected, but to encourage people to leave dirty dishes is a nightmare as means many will just be slobs.
We always gave people the option. Do basic cleaning which essentially meant leave it exactly as you found it, or pay 60€. But no matter what there was a short list of things expected like putting furniture back where you found it, remove rubbish and put away your washing up.
So glad we no longer have our gîte, even tho’ we never used Air over the years we noticed that it influenced people’s (bad) behaviour.
