An evening to remember 🫣

Shall I rephrase that as I think Beelzebub incarnate would be a better alternative than Trump

I read an interesting article a week or two back, John, about why, given everything, Trump and Harris are still virtually tied.

It makes an interesting point. Americans may have become better off under Biden, but if you look at the twenty to thirty year timeframe, people are considerably worse off.

Blue collar workers were thrown under the bus years ago, but now the professional middle class are starting to find they can’t make ends meet. People on 80 grand struggling.

Successive governments have done nothing to arrest this. They’ve basically handed the world to the banks (look at Reeves’ nauseating display placating ā€˜the markets’ since she’s been in, while taking away the fuel allowance and promising to tax the professional classes even more).

Voters have had it with the establishment. They want the damned thing torn down, which has seen the rise of populists like Trump, LePen and Farage. They don’t actually have any answers, but they have a great pitch.

So you can say these voters are stupid or racists. Some of them will be, but there are plenty more who are just angry. The sooner the establishment realises this, the better!

You’re dead right Pete. It’s all about segmentation and targeting. That’s why it’s a 50:50 fight which makes division and just tipping the balance the parties strategies, in the US and the UK, probably elsewhere.

You know, I think I’m done.

I think it might be too late to rescue ourselves from the grotesque version of capitalism that’s taken over whole countries. Grow your own food. Learn how to shoot. It’s probably the best course!

Jesus, we only see the tip. Musk wants to rule the World. And who’s to stop him>

Quite a bit of this anger is manufactured by the right wing though - who are telling out of work blue collar workers that it is all the fault of immigrants (or insert some other easily targeted group) when it is the lack of investment by (typically) the very same right wing politicians.

So, yes, stupid as well - to allow the con men to continue conning them.

There is quite of a lot of anger manufactured by the hard left though

There’s not really such a thing as the hard left in the US, they’ve been rendered pretty much irrelevant in the UK since Corbyn’s defeat and effectively neutered in France for the moment, so I’m curious where you’re seeing the hard left manufacturing anger though, frankly, they should be given current circumstances.

Indeed - people like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Bernie Sanders, who many Americans think of as quasi-communists, would probably slot right into the Lib Dem mould (or Euro Social Democrats) if they were in UK or European politics!

Curious, does your family in NY have women, young women, teens or girls among them? Maybe they ought to pay attention to the Project 2025 and the GOP’s plan to ban abortion and other reproductive rights across the U.S. This is just ONE major plan for Trump’s administration should he be elected President again as detailed in this 90-page Manifeso.

Musk wants to be part of Trump’s Cabinet so he can continue his dominance in winning billion-dollar govt contracts for his tech companies. Both he and Trump are ā€œin bedā€ with Putin. You can GOOGLE it.

In Monday’s edition of WSJ…

I know, you don’t have to convince me Judy  Both those bastards only care about themselves. They have zero, zero interest in anything else. Putin, Xi Jinping, Kim Jong Un, it doesn’t matter, they will dance with the Devil and work with any and every dictator to further their own goals. They admire and want to be dictators themselves. Which is why we urgently need to deal with Orban, our own traitor in the Camp.

It’s a very dangerous time and complacency that it will be all right on the night is misplaced IMO.

If common sense was at all common we would not be having this conversation and I’d still be an EU citizen. The reality is Trump still has a better than even money chance of winning and I’m running around with a bit of plastic that gives me limited rights in France.

Well yes there is that.

Yes, we’re living in a very dangerous time indeed; no matter who gets elected to WH.

The populists are shysters, but if the electorate is stupid, that’s what neglecting the education system brings you. The fact is, a lot of people are worse off, they’ve been badly let down by an incompetent neoliberal establishment, but they can’t quite put their finger on who’s really to blame and fall for simple snake oil solutions.

Too true

Mel Brooks, as always, hit the nail on the head…

I had dinner with a Trumper last night. The ability to ignore Trump’s failings were quite remarkable. The rest of the dinner guests got quite heated with him. But, his ability to ignore facts was incredible. He has already voted - so there was little point in trying to convince him that he should re-consider.
