In an effort to get the thread back on track and raise the gastronomic level a tad, I’ll mention the pleasure I got buying 2026’s first bunch of purple artichokes that have just appeared on the market. The large green ones had been around for a couple of weeks, but these felt like the first new veg of 2026 and a welcome harbinger of Spring.

But one of my winter pleasures is slow cooking a large paleron. Got one yesterday, marinated it overnight and now it’s now spending the day in an 80°C oven. Tomorrow I’ll skim the fat and gently reheat it for dinner, then on Monday pull what’s left and freeze it.

Never mind stir fries, lengthy, slow paced cooking is one of the winter’s kitchen pleasures.

I often do a slow cooker meal overnight on low setting, it’s an antidote to going to sleep unfortunately as you lay there breathing in the wonderful smell of meat cooking.

I never thought of doing that, when I slow cook I put it on for 8 hours starting at 11am.

Depends on how tough the meat is. My SIL said there is on French cut known as 24hr beef for obvious reasons :face_with_hand_over_mouth:

Had a good gig last night, playing with the ceilidh band for a Burns night party (home at 1am). Picked up the Beemer this morning, having got everything sorted in time, had lunch with our grandson and his family. Just eaten my take on pollo con pesto, which I enjoyed, and looking forward to a relaxing evening.

Impressive. I see them on our local markets, but had no idea how they were made. In fact, not being a huge cake fan, I’ve probably never given it any thought at all, but if I had, would have assumed they were made vertically, and certainly not on a spit.

I really must get my eyes seen to, or the bit of the remains of my brain immediately behind them.
A moment ago I read that @Ancient_Mariner had enjoyed some polio, and now I see that you can get a cake by pouring a mixture of something onto a cow on a spit. :weary_face:
