Any cheerful news today? (Nothing negative please! šŸ™‚) (Part 2)

Hare today, gone tomorrow…

Hares are faster than foxes. So fox knows no point in trying to catch them, and hare knows that if a stupid young fox has a go then it can lope off easily.

Apparently I won first prize in one of the tombola’s at my grandson’s Kermesse last night. Not too happy with the prize though he will be as it’s a monstrous Paw Patrol character soft toy. I will let him have it as he is a big fan and has all the merchandise and I already have a load of soft toys from my kids that I kept. Never won anything before in my life.

Congratulations. Maybe it’s an omen of good things to come.

Yes, having to suffer the new Paw Patrol movie when it comes to the local cinema

That doesn’t sound like a good omen for you.

My youngest niece was a big PP fan when she was small. Thankfully those days are gone.

It’s a beautiful evening here, and I’m playing a ceilidh gig tonight at Talton lodge in the Cotswolds.

And the bread I made this afternoon came out ok.

Looks a bit cheesey -

but very edible…

Germany has a similar treat

Baumkuchen - tree cake. Layers resemble growth rings of a tree.

But then covered in chocolate …

Looking out of the front window and right above me is a perfectly formed half circle/jellyfish fluffy cloud with a faint comet-style tail coming off the straight side, looks like a Portuguese Man of War and weird as absolutely no other clouds to be seen anywhere

Today’s cheerful news is that OH and I are still sane… after spending 3 days touring and talking non-stop French with 62 French pals.

Most of them we see regularly, but some of them we only see a couple of times a year.
It was almost as if they considered OH and I as part of the ā€œprogrammeā€.

Everyone wanted to chat with us about UK politics, football etc etc. (I kept trying to turn the conversation to France and Frenchy things)
and there was much laughter when they tried to throw the odd English word into the conversation.
Incidentally, extremely cheerful news.. none of 'em complained/laughed at our French… (and no, they weren’t sloshed )

We think our neighbours have bought a little overgrown corner from another neighbours and they have cleared it (was nice but very overgrown hedges etc). The good news is we now have a lake view from the front of the house!

I’ve laid hundreds of sq m of solid oak floorboards including bathrooms. I used to import oak board from Sequoia (Rennes Chantepie) to the CI and laid/sold foors as part of my oak business.

After a few years, when the hard flooring craze was in full swing, everyone jumped on the flooring wagon, importing cheap stuff from Latvia etc and real joiners weren’t laying the stuff so I got out and left them to it.

I only laid solid board over battens or joists. It was usually the character grade stuff so needed a good mechanical fix. This was ok in bathrooms if the clients were prepared for a little movement, though often there wasn’t any. I didn’t want to inhale glue fumes all day either, while laying.

I had my own dehumidifying kiln, which I built myself, and conditioned solid boards to lay over underfloor heating. My clients were all into the natural look, so I never used engineered board, which is excellent if you want the totally flat appearance.

Just now I am finishing a little bathroom in my barn and considering making a floor surface with crosscut slices of old oak beams/joists, ie endgrain. I have tonnes of 15 yrs seasoned beamstock I didn’t get round to using.

Sequoia is still going after at least 25 years. The owner there is HervƩ Geraud, a nice man who knows his stuff inside out.

Thank you. The boards in this bathroom will go on a concrete floor (over the sous sol) so perhaps engineered will be best. I’d love real oak flooring (or chestnut) but it’s probably just a little too much there.

Watched the France v Senegal match from start to finish last night and enjoyed the thrill especially the tension over the penalty and whether it was valid or not and then Senegal scored in the last minutes with Mbappe adding another one for France. Lovely to see all the fans behaving and enjoying it all. Not bothering with England later though as they don’t interest me. Allez les Bleus!

I had a good day today, with my new toy ordered. Though between driving to Limoges and back, and spending an hour on an unfamiliar motocycle in 34⁰C*, I’m absolutely exhausted. Still, two more months and the effects of hormone treatment should start easing.

*And I won’t ride without proper gear on
