Any cheerful news today? (Nothing negative please! 🙂) (Part 2)

As a non smoker for 50 odd years I nevertheless can understand, though not excuse, the dog ends. When you have smoked the thing to that point it might be still be lit so I suppose they are doing their bit to avoid fires by crushing it out with a foot. Also, I wonder what you would do with a still burning fag, can’t put it in your pocket or even a waste bin. Do some smokers carry empty match boxes perhaps?

Apparently little portable fag end bins are now available

Wow, will wonders ever cease?

Ideally smokers would carry small metal tins with a snug lid that they could pop to dog end into. Putting the lid on would cut off oxygen supply and prevent a fire in their pocket.

Now you mention it, I believe I have seen it, but not for a long time. Perhaps more common amongst rollers, using empty tobacco tins.

Just drove by a lot of folks of all ages wearing tabards and carrying bright green plastic bin bags collecting rubbish in the commune where I went to Leroy Merlin (Espace Rousillon on side of the A9 to Spain) earlier this morning. Had to slow right down and pass on other side of road so they did not step back into my path. The wind blows a lot of rubbish from the commercial centre onto the waste lands around it and by the newest housing estate over there so they were doing well. We get the road sweeping machine every week on this estate cleaning all the verges and soakaways which is nice

My cousin always carries one of these. I didn’t know they even existed,

I don’t understand why people throw their trash everywhere, even though they managed to carry it all the way there before throwing it away. It’s not that hard to put an empty bottle back in backpack or in car instead of throwing it on the ground

There were classes of schoolchildren out collecting litter all around town yesterday.

I gave up smoking 20 odd years ago and had had pocket ashtray since the previous century. Mine was a foil lined plastic pouch, others had metal tins. You can find them in many buralistes now.

I have noticed that a lot of the rubbish previously has come from the commercial centre like huge bits of plastic, card etc as Leroy Merlin and Brico Depot are both on the edge of the centre and put their waste in bins to be collected but obviously the wind has other plans and displaces it outside the area on the sides of the road into the place. As you say, people who throw litter down instead of taking it home or to a bin and I think they should be put in the stocks and pelted with what they threw. We had a go at a tourist car back in the summer who threw a lighted fag but out of his window and we are on constant red fire alert down here and the road verges are tinder boxes waited to catch.

This is identical to what we were kitted out with, though I had my own Hi Viz gilet jaune, and litter picker (I luckily still had my old UK tool, all the others used their hands.). I’d also never heard of the word ‘chasuble’ which is what they described the white tabard/bibs as being called in French.

The locals also told me it was not in the French mentality to throw litter, which is great if true, but I find it a little hard to believe.

This is from the Mairie FB page, taken pre litter pick..

That’s a really nice idea and you’re teaching them young.

The French certainly leave litter on our beach. I did see a school group on there picking up litter with the help of horses and a cart and seeming to enjoy themselves. The horses haven’t become a permanent feature though, which is a shame.

We’ve seen varying degrees of rubbish depending on what part of France we were in. I recall driving from Calais to friends in the Netherlands and being very aware of the change with less rubbish in N. On the whole Bourgogne seems clean with just occasional items dropped.

Here in north Oxfordshire it’s drivers through the village ejecting detritus that cause the mess. Since a MacDonalds opened in Bicester there was noticeably more too. Red Bull cans are also a favourite, with the tins being ejected within a small area suggesting a single specific user.

On the commercial road in London a nasty shitty person through our two or three dozen of those vape type sparklets gas cylinders, incensed by this I jumped from my van scooped up as many as I could and threw them straight back through his window definitely inflicted some pain whilst I told him, never do that again.

The problem is global, and it’s worse in Asia and Africa. We are in the process of creating a geological layer of trash—a sad Anthropocene !

The War Between the Land and the Sea - Last offering in the Torchwood genre from Russell T Davis earlier this year dwelt on this problem. Well worth a watch if you can and also The Abyss’s, a French film offering based on the detritus we leave in our wake

And you survived. I am well impressed. Don’t mess with the @ Corona.

To @Ancient_Mariner
I think you could benefit in a course of boobytrapture.

@Shiba I wonder if this isn’t a bad thing, thinking of future archeological digs of course. How else would the Mary Beards of the time understand us?

It’s all right David, he wasn’t an east end geezer :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Boobytrapure sounds like unexpectedly discovering a beautiful, topless woman who is pleased to see you.
