Any cheerful news today? (Nothing negative please! šŸ™‚) (Part 2)

I’m unreasonably delighted to have just discovered that the singular of spaghetti is spaghetto. So one can quite correctly say that a spaghetto has fallen on the floor.

My previous favourite piece of pedantry was correcting my kids that they were going to buy a panino not a panini. :joy:

Scaramouche, Scaramouche, will you do the Fandango?
Thunderbolt and lightning, very, very frightening me

No wait, that was a little silhouetto.

The phrase that grates on me is when Americans talk about ā€œa savingsā€.

What grates on me is when Americans talk, many talk far too much and have very little to say that matters (only to them )

After a lovely roast lunch at friends this afternoon we all retired to easy chairs and covered lots of subjects of interest before Jules’ dinner bell rang in my head and I hurried home to feed him at 6pm.

Then into the new plot of land where Joppe and helpers were putting the final touches to the fencing and the wonderful new lockable gate at the far corner. He will come back in a week or so to cap all the posts to protect them from the weather which will preserve them 'till I am pushing 100.

My job tomorrow is first to clear some of the wooded obstructions lying on the ground, making sure no spear like shards are left before opening a large section of my own garden fence connecting it to the new area for him, and others in the future, to roam at will.

This new route for future walks will take us away from the fenced off swimming pond and I can then remove the protective fencing alongside it giving access to all 4 sides for surface clearing and dredging. No more newbies in the ogging.

No need for shopping as that normal shopping day has been superceded this week by the extraordinary one yesterday, but I may go into the village to check on Christine and see if she wants some of us non family members to attend her husbands cremation on Wednesday. She indicated that she thought it was family only but I know several people who want to attend. Despite Laurent’s rock star weaknesses he was a popular figure and I for one will miss his cheerful and expansive character.

That sounds wonderful. But go easy on yourself. Clearing wooded obstructions? Maybe a little at a time?

Yes Sue, it is just that here and there some of pieces of wood are laying with sharp points raised partly off the ground. Just to make it safe before I cut a section of fence to join it properly to the garden.

I am really impresssed with what this young man has done, both in clearing the undergrowth a couple of weeks ago and this big one day fencing job yesterday.

All my thoughts were remembered and covered, including a tensioned double wire along the bottom of the welded grillage so that dogs can’t push under it to escape, of course they could dig but this ground is rocky below the surface which is why it was such a big job to drive the spiked cups for the fence posts in.

He came to me from Travaux.com and I am eager for once for a follow up from them (normally such people are a pain once they get your email address) so that I can give him a 5 star evaluation. In the meantime I will recommend him happily to anyone who has similar work in mind.

Not exclusively an American trait, to be fair.

I cannot think of any that even get close

I was amused by the label I saw on a box in our loft this morning.

It’s been up there for a while now. Note that this is just the box.

and sadly often in Eur contexts, too loud

But it’s not the individuals’ fault. Just as in Spain thimgs seem louder

As this is the Cheerful News thread… I can share my exciting news… no, I’ve not won the lottery… but we have bought a few geraniums and fuchsias this morning.

All my old plants (which I’ve over-wintered for years and years… ) suddenly died for no apparent reason. (can’t blame everything on covid  )

Now, in clean pots with fresh compost from the nursery… we’re off and away with some colour on the front deck.

Photos will follow if/when these tiny sprogs grow into decent plants… fingers crossed all will be well. :crossed_fingers:

Talking of gardening, went out and trimmed my vine this morning. There are lots of new stems with little clusters of buds on, and I just trimmed away the stems without to ensure more energy goes to the grapes that should eventually arrive. I’m hoping they will progress a little further this year, and maybe even be usable.

I’m irritated when people talk of ā€œa [white, for example] good.

I once worked with someone even more pedantic than I am, who insisted on referring to any individual item of the meeting agenda as an agendum.

No press ure then

Today my wife received her first ever speeding ticket.

Why is this in the ā€˜Any Cheerful News’ thread?

Because of that (and my having filled out the online form on her behalf, cos she couldn’t figure it out)
I hope I’ll get a lot less grief about my driving.
