Arc browser - anyone using it yet?

I’ve been hearing a lot of positive reviews about Arc recently. Anyone here using it yet?

It’s supposedly very fast and, unlike Chrome, apparently not memory-hungry.

I’m not on Windows 11 and I don’t have a Mac, so I’m unable to try it out myself.

Does it load up programs 2 by 2

Ooo … downloading it now.

Noah course it doesn’t

It does seem very fast, noticeably quicker than Safari

I like the idea of split windows: I often need a couple of windows open.

Not heard of Arc. I’m using Brave at the moment - which I like so far - because Firefox seems to lock up from time to time, especially when I’m half-way through doing something important. Downloading Arc now…

Cue the numerous puns ad nauseam, like:
“does it weld sites together?”
“will I be shocked, or struck down, by its lightning speed?”
“Tony, where are you when we need you?”
etc, etc.

I love Brave. I’d even be prepared to pay a (small) subscription for it.

I hope it doesn’t go the way of Opera (though Opera’s VPN option can sometimes appear useful) and Firefox both of which seem to have sold out to Google/Chrome quietly a while back. Far too many data “sharing” and tracking options found again and again to have been enabled on auto-updates on both of those without having been signposted.

Hoping Brave doesn’t go the same way.

I’m another Brave fan. It’s built on Chromium (like Opera and FF) but it’s much better at privacy.

I’m enjoying the discipline that Arc is imposing on me, not to have too many tabs open at the same time!

Some of what it does with a Magic Mouse is weird though. It’s all taking a bit of getting used to.

I’m just a typo away, yet somehow feeling like I’m joined to this conversation. There will be no sputtering or clinker to cause problems with this browser, and I can see it will be plain sailing now the rain has gone.

'Tis my pleasure to serve. :face_with_hand_over_mouth:

I tried Brave, and was quite impressed. Thing was, there was one feature missing that is present in all other browsers I have used and I tried to look online for a solution but failed. I could not get it to preserve open tabs between sessions. Anyone know how to do this ?

Edit: Doh. Looked online just now and it seems as though you can do this now. When I tried quite a while ago after first hearing about it, there was no option. So, I’ll give it another go.

Yep, it’s in Settings: the Continue where you left off radio button.

Downloaded arc to try last night. It wants me to set up an account with no obvious way round it.

Frankly, stuff that.

Yes you must join the covenant.

Oh, that’s interesting. I wonder if that’s how they’re making their money then. I saw something saying how many employees they’d hired, the swanky offices in New York, the fact it’s a free product - and asking how it’s being financed. Perhaps that’s the answer… Via your personal details.

Email from Google this morning confessing to more data hoovering [=>>and matching across data sources, and selling] they’ve been doing without my explicit permission.

Just substitute “We, Google” for the opening word “You” of their email in the attached and what’s going on is clear.

I clicked on the links, and they seem to be saving addresses I’ve used since past couple of years purchasing on websites that use shopify to take payment. As well as extremely old addresses in 2 further countries that were used 6 years and more ago on foreign Amazon sites.

Following the Google links, which show I do have non-sharing set up everywhere except Display Name and Photo which are both unturnoff-able, I see that Google has now helpfully provided some new fields in my account such as the ability to permit Google to share my information for credit record purposes.

I have not permitted Google at any stage to retain addresses other than the one I signed up with.

I’m persevering with Arc, though it requires a very different way of using a browser.

I can’t work out whether this is because my habits and workflow have adapted to the way browsers work, or because I keep too many bookmarks and like to have too many tabs open at once.

Perhaps I’ll spin up a Windows 11 virtual machine just so I can test Arc… I don’t have a social life anyway
