Ashley Cain on BBC3's Danger Zone and misogyny

The Guardian has an article today (an unedifying read) about this ex-footballer and his social media. He really doesn’t seem to have much respect for women and his posts on X and Snapchat are awful, including advocating violence.

OH’s HR people always check the social media history of job applicants but it seems the Beeb didn’t think to do this. Apparently he connects very well with young men and that’s why they hired him.

Yup…he’s a nasty piece of work who has managed to harmfully influence so many young boys in their attitudes towards other folk and women in particular. (not sure if that is great English but in short, he’s a misogynist)

Along the lines of the T*te creature who sees women as collateral damage? Never heard of this bloke who is probably washed up and trying to make a name for himself most likely

I hadn’t heard of him either. It seems he’s an ex-footballer and he was on Celebrity Masterchef last year. I thought we’d watched that but I don’t remember him.

Nor me, but, as when I saw the name I thought it was a woman perhaps that is what has upset him.

I read The Guardian article this morning and was quite shocked at what this person is accused of doing.

I am always a bit suspicious of these guys with hugely overdeveloped muscles.

Having worked on building sites on and off for 40 years I can tell you that the really strong guys don’t look like that.

One Latvian bloke I knew worked on sites in the CI 6 months a year, 6 months back home building his own house. I called him the Man Mountain. He could post a 16ft x 8” x 10” oak beam off his shoulder up onto the next scaffold lift unaided. He was a big bloke but nothing like those testosterone freaks who are supposed to influence young men.

The Latvians were great to work with. Those Brexiter people have no idea how good some Eastern Europeans are at work, or maybe they do have an idea, and that’s why they didn’t want them.

I read it too, the guy is the lowest form of life.

Absolutely. One of the floorers we had recently was a not very tall Afghan who lifted nearly three times as much without apparent effort as his much taller more obviously muscly colleague.

Sadly, for some people, dominance is the only situation that they are comfortable with, and I suspect he’s one of those who only feel fulfilled by suppressing others.

I think you’re right. But why would the Beeb want someone like that on the network?

Worried that their audience is aging middle class and (foolishly) believing they need to attract “Yoof”.

I think it is partly that, trying to stay relevant. I just hope they try to find better role models who can stand up to proper vetting.

They seem to be struggling to stay relevant, putting all kinds of ‘news’ out, using click-bait style titles on the website. For people of our generation, their strength is neutrality and a mildly intellectual approach to the world, but for a younger generation that’s just tedious/irrelevant. He may have been selected because he was edgy, and they just hoped it wouldn’t be a big problem.

Like many here, I hadn’t heard of him. He seems to have a Neanderthal idea of what it is to be a man.

Why do men snip a bit out of one eyebrow, by the way? Usually the left one.

So it looks like a scar from a fight?

I hadn’t thought of that.
