B&W Laser Printer & Scanner

Posting this here as I think 2 people asked what I was going to get in “Not Applicable in The Cheerful News thread” and I didn’t want to drag that any further off-topic.

Reason for purchase : Using 3rd party ink cartridges because I could get the genuine ones locally anymore kill my 15 year old Epson.

Must haves: A4 monochrome printing and A4 flatbed colour scanner with USB connectivity.

Nice to haves: WiFi/AirPrint capability and an actual paper feed.

I ended up visiting Darty as the other local outlets didn’t have anything that tickled my fancy. They are/were running a Darty/FNAC sale which meant my €200 budget could get me a shiny new Brother DCP-L2627DWXL with 2 toner cartridges (first is good for 2,500 - 3,000 pages), €15 change and a €15 gift card.

Pin sharp prints & scans, a proper A4 paper feed tray and both USB and WiFi connectivity.

The only issue so far has been one of my making where some 3rd security SW I use decided that it was going to block the Brother SW installer tool, and not tell me that it had.

Glad you got it sorted!

I had a Brother laser for 15 years. Hopefully a current one will be as reliable.

Personally I like to keep scanning and printing to separate devices in case one pops off, but YMMV.

If anyone does prefer a separate scanner, the Canon LIDE ones are good because a) they are made by Canon and b) don’t need a wall wart power supply, they run off USB.

My current one is the LIDE 400.

Thanks NotaLot, you’ve given me a starting point as techs not my strong point!

I’m also a fan of Brother laser printer. After many, many years with Canon and Epson inkjets , I finally took the jump to laser, colour laser to be exact, and Brother is excellent!
And compatible cartridges are available at less than half price compared with Epson originals.

I’ve got a Brother DCP-1610W, printer/scanner/copier.

Bought it in 2016, for £73.61, including shipping, and it’s still working.

Compatible cartridges are currently about £14 each, with a claimed capacity of 1,000 pages, but I turned off the “replace cartridge” setting in the menu, giving me a lot more pages.

I think age probably killed your 15 year old Epson, rather than third party cartridges. The heads very gradually wear with age and the droplet nozzles get smaller and clog. And that’s just the start of you problems

For all those fans of Brother printers, I also have a Brother MFC printer. It’s inkjet rather than laser as I need a colour A3 photo quality printer and buying a good quality A3 colour laser is quite expensive.

I too have a B&W Brother laser scanner/printer. Invoices and devis are sent in aesthetic colours by email. Printing is 99% internal paperwork, so no need for colour, which is expensive and mostly irrelevant in my line.

As some say, when buying a printer, look at the cost of replacement cartridges.

Bonne journée à tous!

Yes. And Brother consistently has reasonable solutions here. I had 2 Brother inkjets back in the States. They were reliable and didn’t cost the earth to refill. When I moved here I looked first at the available refill cartridges at Action and didn’t see any Brothers. I went with a used Epson X2100 because ink was cheap, and it did the job OK while I printed reams of paper for the French admins the first year. After that, it got lazy and soon clogged. So I bought a used B&W Ricoh SP112SU laser flatbed scanner and it works fine, except only on USB. But anyway, get something like that, Brother if you can find one.

Moving from inkjet to a monochrome laser makes a lot of sense given your experience. Laser printers handle third party toner much better and tend to last longer with lower running costs. Many all in one models now include reliable flatbed scanners and USB by default. WiFi is useful, but a solid paper feed and simple drivers usually matter more day to day.

I’m finding the WiFi printing feature very useful for printing out stuff from iThings that I don’t need saved to the Office PC.

Is it one that does WiFi and ethernet as well as USB ? If so, many Ricoh printers have a lead under the scanner that switches between WiFi and Ethernet. It can’t support both. It’s a bit bonkers but there you are :person_shrugging:

No. It is at least 10 years old and is USB only. I wasn’t really paying attention when it popped up for 20€ with 1€ shipping on LBC. I do miss the wifi, but it works well.

If your “office” is part of another room and you don’t want a printer sat on a desk, I highly recommend the wheeled table and ruggedised cabling approach.

Just bought a 4 pack of compatible toner cartridges, for my Brother DCP-1610W, printer/scanner/copier.

£27.88 including shipping. :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:
