Since Breshite I know it’s been practice by some terrible people to sneak a few packs of Bacon and maybe a Banger or two back to France after a UK visit. I if course would never consider or condone such a nefarious thing .
I seem to remember (or dreaming) that the rules have recently changed, and that pre packed meat for personal consumption was now allowed.
Google says that I may have had some type of drug induced erotic meat dream .
Has anyone got any info to suggest I wouldn’t be liable to called a sumgler if I put a couple of kilos of Best Cumberland in the boot when I come back after my next trip to beat up the grandkids.
A word of warning about smuggling. Many years ago I was arrested at Heathrow for smuggling. I had a turtle shell that I found on a beach in West Africa. I was given a caution and told if I committed any future offence, this incident would be added to the charge.
Today, if I try and enter UK using electronic passport gates, I get redirected to a customs officer. It’s not a problem, just a pain every time. I guess being caught with smuggled bacon would have the same result.
Depending on how you are travelling the chances of this being picked up are small, tiny, or miniscule. But if you are the unlucky one and get stopped then the goods will be removed, you will be lectured in public and your face will be red.
We got stopped in Geneva carrying compté cheese, which apparently has the same profile in the scanner as Semtex so is easy to spot. They also took my container of frozen pumpkin soup that we were taking to have for dinner on arrival.
A short french man was lead away by two very large Douanes at Lyon airport, his legs dangling as if he was walking. I asked a French girl sitting on the same bench, fromage? “We”. Still amazing that the finely turned palate and noses of france dont seem to be able to tell fromage from marzipan.
The Trading Post do excellent Back Bacon and Lincolnshire Sausages packed in the EU and shipped to a collection point where you meet the van driver. All legal and above board.
If proper English bacon and sausages are your thing and you are in the SW then Bulldog Bacon and Bangers are brilliant and have organised collection points over a wide area.
EDIT. if I ever moved back to UK, that is one thing I would miss.
Well I like the local made Catalan sausage here, all meat and no cereal. The last English sausages I had were awful, bland and a strange colour too. As for bacon, easy to find rashers or poitrine and slice it yourself.
Most of the companies mentioned above deliver to certain collection points around the country, but what we like about Bacon by the Box is that it is delivered to your home. No faffing around having to go to collect it.
…And doubtless the risk arose after the administrative change known as Brexit?
I find it strange that previously there was no disease risk anyone worried about but now, after an administrative change, there is.
I could think of more intra-European borders, not subject to such restrictions, where I’d worry about what could be transferred across.
Sorry to sound stroppy, I’m as committed to the protection of people, wildlife and the environment as anyone. But it all seems a little hypocritical that suddenly there’s a threat since Brexit that there wasn’t before.
