I have 2 bath towels, but they have been with us for years and are showing it. One, the red one, is getting very threadbare and thus a bit rough on the skin. The other, the bright yellow one, is no better and bears an ever increasing hole in it on each use.
So I decided to treat myself and, shock horror, not from the Big A. I was going to Nontron anyway for Jules’ pills from the vet so called in to Inter to see what they had. Quickly found what I was looking for and they were soon in the car. Yesterday was the first time I used one to go to the pond. As usual I wound it round my waist and tucked the loose end in securely for the trip up the slope. It was too big, I had to tuck it in under my armpits like a big girl to avoid tripping over it. Not very successful as I am not a big girl and have little up top to keep it in place, so today with my new modesty screen installed ready for the leafless winter, I just hung it round my neck.
But what a difference, so thick and soft and warm on my skin, can’t wait for winter to arrive when I no doubt wil have it draped over my shoulders.
One is rust coloured and the other is pure white, so perfect for autumn and winter. Not that we get much snow round here though, but not that many predators of humans either, fortunately.
Good to hear you are treating yourself to a bit of luxury. My Mum would have joined the edges to the middle where most wear occures and got a couple more seasons out of them
Reminds me of Gyles Brandreth’s Richard Whiteley anecdote.
“I remember him [Whiteley] taking me into his dressing room, immediately adjacent to Carole’s room. He had found a strategically placed hole in the partition wall. He told me he was going to report the hole to security. And then he thought, ‘To hell with it, let her look.’”
I could do with new towels too but the ones i’ve seen in the normal places I go to for sheets and similar are a)small and b) thin. Never thought to look in a supermarket. It was Inter(marche) you were were referring to, @David_Spardo ? Not Inter(sport) or any other Inter?
I’ve never been impressed at all by French towels, they are always way too thin! At one point I resorted to getting mum to bring some from Oz! After lots of sheet fails as well LaRedoute has been great, clearly listed thickness / fabric etc and I was impressed with the quality of both the linen and cotton things I bought last year. Not tried their towels, perhaps the same story as sheets?
Thinking about David’s experience though, the washing glove things (flannels like mittens) that I bought from Intermarche were far better quality than any I found elsewhere….
What is it about French sheets. They just don’t fit. My OH calls them ‘comedy sheets’. They all seem to be about 1 cm wider than the bed but about 4 m long.
Tried some top sheets from Leclerc and some from Jysk both labeled as being suitable for the bed size but just don’t fit. Fitted bottom sheets are fine.
We purchased some from the UK company Kings of Cotton and they did not fit our bed. I measured the bed and determined that that was the issue, after washing the sheets things only got worse., they were way less than the specified size.
I don’t think the place of origin determines fit unless you have evidence to the contrary.
Do you like Linvosges? I found their towels more style over substance in that they were very pretty but not very absorbant. Bought once, and never again.
this is what I go for. A big more expensive but they last
Only problem is the width, yesterday to avoid trailing it on the ground, I doubled it longways and tucked it around my waist. Seeing my reflection in the veranda doors as I walked up the slope it looked as if I was wearing a mini skirt.
Good job I have the knee to carry it off. Being right handed my right knee is a little distorted presumably by muscle, but the left one is suitably elegant I think.
