BBC proms in July

I’m planning to go to the proms in July with my family but none of us have any idea which seats to buy. Has anyone any idea or experience of the seating in the Albert hall?

I’ve been there a few times and thought the acoustics weren’t bad. Personally I prefer tickets in the circle for visibility, but it depends on what the prices are and what your budget is.

Prices are between 16 and 60. As this is likely to be a one off I’m happy to go with the higher prices. I’m thinking you would see more from the side than the front. I think we’re too old to stand in the circle

I could be wrong but I thought last time I went to the Royal Albert Hall it was seated only, especially in the circle.

This site shows you the view from different seating areas, but slightly romanticised. Be careful of pillars (used to only be marked in tiny letters).

Also think whether sound or view is your priority.

For the Proms the Hall has a large standing only area that covers the arena and gallery.

That’s excellent really helpful. So I’m thinking a side stall 1st or 2nd level. Would the acoustics get better the higher up you are?

You can google a lot on the RAH website. This is about seating, I expect there’s something about sound as well.

When we used to go to concerts at the Royal Albert Hall,we always chose seats on the ground floor around the promanade area (the bit where they stand for the proms)

On entering, there was a large sign saying “no food allowed in the auditorium” but we would often take a picnic basket complete with tablecloth and real glasses. We enjoyed some disapproving stares but then some sympathetic smiles when people returned from their long queues and overpriced wine during the interval.

Aren’t there seats behind the orchestra at the ROH? ISTR a friend telling me that was best sound, although you got the view of the backs of the orchestra.

I know the ROH changes the layout according to what’s on and my partner said the oval-shaped floor they used to use for the Dance Championships that were held there was a pig shape to dance on
