You might be interested in a traditional interior sprung bed base with a traditional woolen mattress on it. If so, research online with "sommier traditionnel" ("tapissier" is not specific enough) and "matelassier" :

I changed last year and looked around and found the best deal at BUT. Not an expensive bed and with no 'mod cons' but amazingly solid for a 'kit form' bed. I'm not really into all this 'put together yourself stuff' but I have been quietly surprised. Alinea had some nice beds too but more pricey.
Have you looked at CDiscount - they have their sale on at the moment and there are quite a few reductions.
