Action is your friend here. They do cheap cards, some crap, some really quite nice. They also do, even cheaper, DIY card packs.
My wife gives card making lessons to a local group of friends, and we have more home made cards than we can use. She also sells a small number through the Oxfordshire museum and in the village church to help support it.
As for receiving, while it’s nice, I’d be just as happy with a personal email or WhatsApp message, but not a phone call - hate talking on the phone. I suspect many men would see cards as a woman-thing because they’re ambivalent about them but forgetting a card for their other half is a “very bad idea”.
Last year I decided to draw/paint my own cards. I purchased a large packet of blank cards and envelopes, and I’ve taken great delight in doing them, and the recipients have all given some much appreciated feedback. The effort was mainly driven by the abysmal selection of cards available in France, combined with my enjoyment to create.
Vistaprint offers postcards which you can create yourself with your own photos and add a message. We created some ourselves. Not very expensive.
How can one not appreciate being sent this as a handmade card at christmas? (We liked it so much that haven’t binned it although the message is to use it to burn to keep warm )
I have been making and sending hand made cards since 1978 both at Christmas, and for special people for Birthdays too. I recently had to clear out my parents house and found a huge folder which contained all the saved birthday, mothers day, fathers day, Easter and Christmas cards I had sent them!
Yes I usually buy my cards there but last time they had a poor selection so left it. Their books for young children are a wonderful price too compared with the bookshops and supermarkets, some are less than €1

There’s a yearly fee and you can send as many cards for as many occasions as you want. The selection is good and there are always new ones being added. It has a handy reminder system too, if you put your contacts and their birthdays in your address book you get a reminder one week before their birthday.
This was the latest cards I drew on one of the blanks, which I actually copied from the internet an awful lot of images out there to use, and it didn’t take very long at all:+1:
