Birthday cards sent online

Forgot a family member birthday so decided to use M**np*g online as based in UK and with the post still backed up a bit here knew it would get there in time for saturday. Basic cost of card with just a name on front, simple text inside and the smallest size came to £4,99 inc first class postage. Got my bank statement just now online and have been charged €5,69 + €0,53 for using my french debit card for hors europe. To some this is a pittance but when you are on a limited income, a lot of money just for something that will be binned and to be honest, I thought it would work out the same as buying a card here and posting normally but is far more expensive especially if like me, you buy your cards from Action etc. Adding up all the cards to be sent over a year, it is no longer an option for me to use this service now.

Mrs P makes her own.

A photo (printed on the photo printer) stuck to a piece of folded card.

I haven’t costed it, but I imagine it’s substantially cheaper than your source.

I think you would be better to have a good phone call rather than a birthday card.

The use of Xmas cards is dropping year on year - they do seem to be a waste of money and poor for the environment- again better to have a good long chat with someone to let them know you are thinking about them. Perhaps it is a generational thing.

No doubt and well done to wife. I am not a crafty type of person and can’t do that sort of thing very well

Difficult to pin down as she is always busy or at work and I only send xmas cards now to my family here and to my mum in a care home for her to have something to look at. I am pretty close to my two sisters but everyone else dosn’t get cards any more. I just thought I would warn folks as some may do an order online for several cards to go over the coming months and then find they have spent rather a lot of money they did not bargain for!

Never used it, but useful warning, thanks.

I do still send real cards to people I know value the effort and get pleasure from a real things arriving in the post. It’s not a massive cost if appreciated. Sadly outside museums most French cards are pretty ugly.

Gave up looking for a seventieth card the other day, and in the end sent ‘seven tea’-bags. Which made her laugh so worth it for the €4.

Yes, I also like to slip a letter inside to keep up with the news, not everyone is on facebook so unless someone makes an effort to keep in touch, you are always wondering about them. I stopped sending to nieces and nephews when they got to be teenagers, they never ever thanked anyone so I thought why bother any more.

Nor was she - it’s something she decided to develop!

Obviously not for everyone

I’ve just unearthed some card blanks with holes in the front that I bought in the UK (thinks - wonder if Action do them) and they definitely don’t require craft skills. A few bits of sellotape on the corners of the photo inside the card and Bob’s your uncle. I agree with @JaneJones about the difficulty of finding decent cards here - our local bookshop stocks cards and had some beautiful ones but no longer - turns out they were produced in the UK and the producers can no longer ship to the EU. I can’t imagine why not…

I was looking at some lovely cards in LeClerc the other week but nothing under €5 each which when you add another euro and a bit to the cost, it becomes very expensive indeed, incidentally petrol locally went up yesterday at SU so driving several kms each way just to buy cards also adds to the cost.

Although it might not apply to your situation this kind of thing is one of the many reasons not to give up a UK bank account (or a bank account in whichever other jurisdiction you have access to).

I thought from the title you were going to be asking about Jacquie Lawson and the like. I’ve used her site right from the beginning when she did that amazing Christmas tree card for friends.
There isn’t quite the same magic as in the early days, but her site now has a large selection and I find her very useful for semi-friends at Christmas and last minute (or late!) birthday cards.
Her membership prices have gone up over the years - now £24 / 28€ but you can send as many as you like all over the world for no extra cost. And there’s plenty of room to write more of a letter than just a greeting.
I’m sure there are other cheaper online/electronic card companies (I’ve occasionally received them) but I think hers are the classiest.

I agree, @SuePJ and I have kept a subscription going for that reason. However, I know that there are quite a few people on this site who think that her cards carry a viral load (which they don’t) and therefore seriously disapprove. Keep your head down, Sue

Really? Never knew that. How paranoid can one get???

I would imagine the flack may well start arriving about lunchtime, so be prepared…

In my experience, more of a gender thing. Women and girls seem to like cards - making and receiving. And younger people seem to prefer to avoid the telephone!

Given that most of the men I know rely on their wives/partners to make all the social contacts, I’m not sure it’s quite such a simple matter of choice on the part of the women…

Its much safer that way😉
