Hi all,
Are these blueberries? (First two photos). We’ve just moved house and Im trying to identify various plants and harvest and freeze some of the fruit. They look like blueberries to me but I don’t want to poison anyone if they’re not! The last photo look a bit like blackcurrants but Im not convinced that they are (they seem too small)
Look like black currents to me. Have you tried google lens on a photo of the fruit and leaf?
They are Sloe’s - often used to make Sloe Gin (in the first photo) - third photo are different.
Agree with @Mat_Davies , sloes in the first picture. Could be blackcurrants in the second , but unclear what the whole plant looks like. If in doubt, don’t eat
No I haven’t tried it Corona. Will give it a go.
Hmm, I’m confused now. The first two photos are of the same plant
Sorry - first and second photo are sloes - can’t count to three!
Agree with Mat, first and second are most likely sloes. Could be bullace, how big is the bush/tree and does it have thorns? Third one looks a bit like cornus fruits, which won’t kill you but neither will they do much.
I agree about the sloes but it’s easy to check - do they have long thin vicious thorns on the stem?
It’s about 3.5-4m tall and yes it does have thorns Jane.
Yes Angela, it does have vicious looking thorns.
Definitely a sloe then. Are you a fan of sloe gin?
Not sure about no 3. How big is it and what sort of size are the fruits? The shape of the berries is very like blackcurrants but the leaves are all wrong for that.
Definitely a fan of sloe gin😂. I agree - don’t think that they are blackcurrants.
Need to find out how to make it!!
Another one for the sloe party, I have 2 or 3 of them growing wild here and they are viciously sharp if you aren’t carefull. So it’s gin all round for us later is it?
You’ve set me thinking now, I have always left them for the birds, but
I may have to come for a visit if you have enough to share! When are they ripe,?
I’ve only had it once about 25 years ago and still remember how much I enjoyed it!
Just checked, there’s loads of them growing not 3 feet away from you when you were sorting out the positioning of @JaneJones’ plants. And there is a another bush just outside the back door, can’t remember where the others are,
Come anytime you like but beware of the spikes, really sharp and over 2 inches long.
BTW, did you make use of the eucalyptus cutting, no cuddly Koalas seen here yet, but some might say I’m a bit of a Galah to expect any.
After the first frosts…, or you pick them when they look ripe and put them in the freezer.
Surely David we can share with the birds - the sloes not the sloe gin
