Currently living in the US and back to France in a week, I wonder what the fuss is all about? WHAT is really so bad about opening up borders and free trade? Coincidentally the business I am in?
While NAFTA is not perfect, it sure did help further this continent's trade. Especially Mexico and Canada came out smelling like roses.
Europe to a large extent, but countries like France specifically sure could use a capitalist shot in the arm. Reading today's headline of Diesel rationings in the Charente makes that gorgeous country look more like Venezuela than Germany.
If you've ever been to China, you'd quickly find out who is going to eat your lunch sooner or later and it's not all the bad guys in the Western hemisphere.

You make a good overall point here Martin, but I suppose the trouble is that people in the UK are used to the 'First past the Post' system of elections, and hence 51% will be enough to succeed --- either way. I suspect that it will be necessary to adopt a more 'Proportional Representation' system in relation to voting in general before the 51% rule will be changed.
Diesel is in short supply because of workers trying to defend what few rights they have left. I guess you wouldn't be used to trade unnions in the US.

I would go further, and say that I remain strongly against the principle of referenda. Typically (and the decision on our future EU membership is a classic example) the issues are deeply complex, and require access to a mass of research data and analysis to make a well-informed decision. This is what we elect our representatives to do. And in the main, this is what they do do. The motivation to deliver for the civil good is remarkably strong in most politicians.
Conversely when the electorate as a whole is asked to decide such issues, it tends to base its decision more on its prejudices and biases than on well-researched information. The topics are usually too complex to be easily communicated in full, so decisions are driven by soundbites. And worse, where the well-researched information does not fit the voters' prejudices, it tends to be discounted or ignored. The behaviour of the Brexit camp is a classic such example.
Referenda are dangerous, and should be banned.

Yep, read and re read it and it still sounds you're finding a polite way to say the elecorate aren't qualified to make such an important decision based on the facts presented. I have to say I agree with what you are saying. This is a mega important referendum for the UK and Europe. The facts, hyperbole and mis-information being thrown around is frightening. How can anyone be expected to make such a decision when there are no precedents ? Nowt like this has been carried out and I blame Cameron for even contemplating such a 'vote-winner' as part of the personal manifesto aimed at the floating voters.

Trying to determine truth from fiction in this debate is not easy. Both sides spout all sorts of scare stories but do not back them up! The latest of these come from the stayers who are telling us that the value of houses will fall dramatically. Why should this be? there is a shortage of houses in the UK so demand will still be there.
But it is the Brexiteers who concern me at the moment - not so much those with personal reasons rather than the political figures. Some major items are not being explained. "Facts" are being spouted but with no explanations - are we being misled? We need a repected figure to consult so I have been on the phone to none other than "Skippy", the famous Australian marsupial known for his love of mankind despite seeing so many of his friends going to an early grave with a mirror image of the word Toyota stamped on to their pelts...

It would be better for Brits to start by electing for themselves a competent leader.
Only then should they consider choosing the future President of other states, whether it be the USA, Libya,Iraq, etc
I don't appreciate Mrs Clinton or Mister Trump, but I don't have voting-rights in the USA, and perhaps more importantly, I don't know those people, apart from what the media tell me.
The MSM are not always reliable or impartial.
The pity of it all is that we'll never know who's right or wrong. What will happen will happen and the UK will learn to get on with it as usual...
The UK made their decision and so must live with it. The French made their decision a few years back but mercifully this desperate regime will soon be at an end. It's called 'Democracy', warts 'n all.
