I’m not personally convinced. Whilst I accept that there will be many with absolutely honourable intentions, the cynic in me sees this as a good number with dishonourable intent - just to get a piece of paper which allows them to claim priority at Tescos and the like in front of the queues for shopping trips.

Well, if they don’t die of COVID-19, perhaps cirrhosis of the liver might be a good alternative to keep the coronavirus claimed numbers down…
My concern is that those half-a-million people will be allowed to roam the country, ill-prepared and potentially spreading it even more. I share your cynical thoughts.

The issue is also that as doctors and nurses are overwhelmed they will not have time to train and manage volunteers.

Half a million is a lot of people to add to all the other “essential” workers in circulation. Since apparently you can’t get tested unless you have advanced symptoms (or you’re Prince Charles or a government minister or suchlike), how can having so many extra potential carriers out on the streets not increase infection, however well meaning and careful they all are?

It wouldnt surprise me if some of the deaths are related to the withdrawal symptoms when i see the binge drinking habits of a lot of the british public.
